At the end of a one minute preparation period, the affirmative will begin to debate on one of the two topics. The affirmative is allotted a two minute constructive speech followed by a one minute cross-examination. The negative will then have one minute to prepare a two minute constructive speech which will be followed by a one minute cross examination. Both speakers will then be allowed one minute for rebuttal without preparation time.

BIG QUESTION DEBATE:

The current question is: Resolved: Science leaves no room for free will.

“Entries from participating schools and any judges they provide consent to the rules of the Big Questions event, including the format and topicality guidelines. Schools should provide their judges with access to the National Speech & Debate Association’s judge training resources prior to the tournament. Event resources for students and coaches are provided by the NSDA. Judges and competitors will also be asked to complete a brief survey before leaving the tournament site.”

Structure of the Debate: Each side will make an opening presentation, laying out the arguments and reasons to prefer their side of the resolution. These are called the Constructive speeches, and they are five minutes long. The Affirmative side will always speak first. If there is a pair debating, the first speaker will give the Constructive speech. Following these speeches, there is a three minute question segment. For more information on how to structure the debate visit the NSDA website: https://www.speechanddebate.org/big-questions/
