Dear Grade 9 APGA athletesDue Oct 17th

Your job is to improve your proof reading skills. To assist you in this task you will need to understand the difference between reading and proof reading. Reading means “read what is being said” and understand it.

“Proof reading” means you read it the 1st time to understand what it says.

The reread it at least 2 more times looking for errors to correct.

Always proof read your self 1st. Many of us type the material so proof 1st from the computer screen, then at a later time from a printed hard copy and then again a 3rd time after you have had a break from the task and done something different.

Check from the list below yourself first. After you have done your own proof reading you are ready to pass it on to someone else to recheck your work.

Proof reading Errors you are looking for are:

-KISS sentences Keep It Short Simple. No “run” on sentences thatgo on and on!

-1 paragraph = 1 idea not a whole page of many ideas in one paragraph. A paragraph

consists of at least 2 sentences.

- English errors such as: grammar, spelling errors, capitol letters on proper names,

-content errors: Did they answer the question that was asked?

-consistency: if they chose to answer in point form does each point start with a

capitol letter or always a small non capitol letter…of course any sentence starting

with “I” whether point form or not must have a capitol at the start of a sentence.

Do they have periods or question marks at the end or not? Either all points will or

won’tfor consistency

-chose 2 different people that you normally don’t sit with to proof read your

material. Rotate your proof readers and if someone does a better job go back to the

best proof reader.

Now that you know the criteria of proof reading so lets put it into practice.

Read the article called “Only great minds can read this” to understand what the author is saying. Then reread the article with the intent of proof reading. You will fix all the errors. First make your corrections on the article itself and then retype your corrected version below and hand both of these to me on Monday in class.

Spelling is important as the article says only 55% of us can read this and we want 100% to be able to read it so proof reading is essential.
