January 3rd 2014

Dear CASC Ontario members, Happy New Year, May 2014 bring you what you need.

On behalf of our Ontario Council I bring you our winter communique. The council continues to work on our preparedness for college registration with some wonderful work being done by our Ontario Professional Practice and the Ontario Educational Standards committees. The following is a report from the educational standards group from Neil Elford and his team of supervisors across Ontario.

CASC Ontario Supervisors’ Discussions about possible changes to SPE

CASC Supervisors are currently discussing ways that education provided through SPE programs (both Pastoral Counseling Education and Clinical Pastoral Education) engages the emerging standards related to required education of those registering with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), while continuing to meet the CASC Accreditation Standards. During a video-teleconference on December 6, 2013 the Supervisors decided to explore ways to engage CRPO about being recognized as an educational program. A Working Group was formed to begin this work: Michael Chow, Shawn Lucas, Larry Beach, Angela Schmidt, Nicolas El-Kada, someone from UHN, Kathy Edmison, Tom Kilt, Neil Elford (Chair), and Marvin Shank. Please contact any member of the Working Group with suggestions.

There is work being done on our Ontario Council terms of reference which we hope to have completed in time for our National Conference in Winnipeg. We have booked a breakfast meeting for April the 10th during the conference and we hope many of you will be able to attend this year. There will be no charge to Ontario members for this breakfast and a charge of $10 for those from outside Ontario.

It was brought to our attention at our December council conference call that the target date of April 2014 for registration in the college has now been moved out to an unknown date as yet. We also learned in December that sometime in January or February 2014 the Transitional Council will be looking for volunteers to trial the grandfathering process with priority given to those who have completed their Juris -prudence module. With this in mind continue your work in putting your professional and academic portfolio together, and completing your Jurisprudence module.

Attached you will find two helpful resources from Marvin Shank, “CASC identity in an Ontario Inter-professional College Context” and, “Exemption or Inclusion: Who Should Register in the College? CASC Perspectives.” We hope these will offer greater insight into the historical perspective and tremendous effort that bring us to where we find ourselves today.

We look forward to seeing many of you in Winnipeg at this year’s National Conference
