Dear BASF Coatings Supplier:
The 2003 BASF Coatings Supplier Quality Report Card (SQRC) is attached. The SQRC has been developed as a tool to assist in the selection, development, evaluation and control of the supply base in accordance with our established quality system. Your performance on the SQRC continues to be a key element in the decision making process for supply allocations. The scope of the SQRC includes raw material suppliers to the BASF OEM Coatings manufacturing facilities; Greenville, Ohio; Belvidere, New Jersey; Morganton, North Carolina; Windsor, Ontario; Tultitlan, Mexico; and the BASF Industrial Coatings facilities; Batavia, Illinois; and Decatur, Alabama.
The rating criteria for the 2004 performance year have remained the same and are included with this correspondence. This evaluation continues to emphasize incoming quality, on time delivery, product capability, and technical support. New to this year’s report is an additional measure for Purchasing Value. This measure targets the commercial ease and overall value a supplier brings to BASF. You may also note that the measure for Quality Systems has been eliminated. This does not mean that a quality system is not required; rather both QS9000 and ISO/TS16949 stipulate that all suppliers must be ISO9000:2000 certified, as a minimum, in order to qualify as a tier two supplier to the automotive industry. If you are not yet certified to ISO9000:2000, please contact us to develop a plan for certification. Those suppliers that are lacking an ISO certification will be eliminated from the OEM supply base.
In December of 2003, BASF initiated a supplier bar code labeling requirement. Suppliers are now required to provide bar code labels on each inbound raw material shipment to a BASF Coatings manufacturing facility. The benefits to BASF and our suppliers are significant, so we look to you to make this initiative work. As of July 1, 2004, all manufacturing sites will issue nonconformances for missing or non-compliant bar codes. Be aware that any nonconformances you receive will factor into your supplier rating.
By June 30th, you will receive an electronic version of the 2004 BASF Coatings Supplier Delivery Requirements. It is critical that you communicate all of these requirements to the appropriate functions within your business, as these requirements are components of your rating and subsequent position within the supply base.
The submission of product data for the 2004 performance year evaluation must be received by January 31, 2005. The product data to be submitted should include descriptive statistics, control charts, and capability analysis for all lots and properties of products that are purchased by a BASF Coatings facility. This submission should also include root cause analysis on out of control points, as well as a brief statement regarding your continuous improvement program. As we move forward with our paperless approach to business, we would prefer that all submissions be sent electronically.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact us.
