Dear Barbieri Parents/Guardians:
It is time again to get ready for the Barbieri School Spelling Bee. The Spelling Bee is lots of fun and we hope you bring your child/children to participate or just watch. The Spelling Bee is open to students in grades 3rd, 4th, and 5th and children will spell in English and Spanish, but the whole family can come to cheer on all the participants.
Attached you will find a wordlist for your child’s grade to be reviewed for the Spelling Bee scheduled for:
WHEN: THURSDAY, FEBRUARY16, 2017, 6:30 PM
WHERE: BARBIERI SCHOOL AUDITORIUM
We will start the night at the auditorium where the Master of Ceremonies of the Spelling Bee will go over the rules.Then we will break into groups by grade.
Please help your child practice the words following the steps below that will be used in the Spelling Bee.
- Read the word to your child, for example STOP.
- At your child’s request repeat the word, use it in a sentence or clarify the meaning.
- If your child is ready to give the answer, have him/her follow these steps:
1st Repeat the word, for example “stop”
2nd Spell the word S T O P
3rd Finish by repeating the word again “stop”
- Your child can make a mistake and start again only if he/she does it before completing the three steps above “repeat the word, spell, repeat the word”.
At the time of the contest, if your child spelled the word correctly, the moderator will say correct and your child will sit down until his/her next turn.
If your child misspelled the word and completed the format of “repeat the word, spell, repeat the word”, he/she is done and will join the audience.
The moderator will ask the same word to the next child/children until the word is spelled correctly.
The moderator will continue asking to spell words until only one child remains.
The moderator will settle any questions that arise.
Please make sure your child studies the bonus words as well in case the moderator uses them if he/she runs out ofwords from the corresponding grade list or has to increase the level of difficulty.
Once the group is done, the trophy for 1st place will be presented and medals for 2nd and 3rd place. Every participant will receive a reward for his/her participation.
We will need parent volunteers to be moderators (3 in English and 3 in Spanish) and read the words to the participants. If you are able to be one of the moderators or have any questions about the Bee, please contact Wendy Habeski at 617-694-7338 .

When your child is participating in the Spanish rounds of the Spelling Bee here are some notes related to the way in which your child would spell the words that include the below letters during the Spelling Bee contest, these notes are in addition to the format you already know (say the word – spell the word – say the word).

Estimados Padres o Tutores:
Nuevamente ha llegado el momento de prepararnos para el CONCURSO DE ORTOGRAFIA en inglés y en español de la escuela Barbieri. El concurso es muy divertido y esperamos que su niño/a pueda participar o simplemente observar. Es un evento familiar en el que los estudiantes de 3ro, 4to, y 5to grados están invitados a participar.
Adjunto encontrará la lista de palabras correspondiente al grado de su niño/a que debe practicar para el concurso de ortografía que se efectuará como sigue:
CUANDO: JUEVES 16 DE FEBRERO DEL 2017 A LAS 6:30 PM
DONDE: AUDITORIO DE LA ESCUELA BARBIERI
Comenzaremos la noche en el auditorio donde el Maestro de Ceremonias del concurso repasará las reglas de manera general y posteriormente nos dividiremos en grupos por grado.
Favor de ayudar a su niño/a a practicar las palabras de acuerdo a los siguientes pasos que se usarán en el concurso.
- Léale la palabra a su niño/a. Ejemplo ALTO.
- Repita la palabra, úsela en una oración o aclare su significado si su hijo/a se lo pide.
- Su niño/a está listo/a para deletrear la palabra, debe seguir los siguientes pasos al contestar:
1ro Repetir la palabra “alto”
2do Deletrear la palabra A L T O
3ro Terminar repitiendo otra vez la palabra “alto”
- Su hijo/a puede corregirse a sí mismo o comenzar nuevamente solamente si lo hace antes de concluir los tres pasos anteriores “repetir la palabra, deletrear, repetir la palabra”.
Durante el concurso, si su hijo/a deletrea la palabra correctamente, el moderador le dirá correcto y el niño/a se sentará hasta su próximo turno.
Si su hijo/a deletrea la palabra incorrectamente después de concluir los pasos de “repetir la palabra, deletrear, repetir la palabra”, el niño/a se incorporará a la audiencia y habrá terminado su participación.
El moderador seguirá preguntando la misma palabra al/los siguiente(s) participante(s) hasta que se deletree correctamente y continuará pidiendo que se deletreen más palabras hasta quedar un sólo niño/a.
El moderador contestará cualquier duda, pregunta o inquietud que surja.
Cuando el grupo de su hijo/a haya terminado, los ganadores de primer, segundo y tercer lugar serán reconocidos y cada participante recibirá un pequeño detalle.
Necesitaremos padres voluntarios para ser moderadores (3 en español y 3 en inglés) y leerles las palabras a los participantes. Si usted pudiera ser uno de los moderadores o si tuviera alguna pregunta acerca del concurso de Ortografía, favor de comunicarse con Frances Melendez
