Dean of International (College of Physical Sciences and Engineering)

The Dean of International will be responsible and accountable to the Pro Vice-Chancellor, International and Europe and the relevant College Pro Vice-Chancellor, within the framework of the University’s overall strategy, policies and procedures, for coordinating the College’s international activities, partnerships and reputation. The key function of the role is to align and coordinate the College’s/School’s International Strategy with the University International activities.

The Dean of International will be a member of the College Board and will be expected to work with the PVC, International and Engagement, and the PVC for the College on the following:

  1. Development within the College of international partnerships with key strategic partners globally in both research and education with a focus on a specific country/region;
  2. Ensuring that the College is actively involved in international collaboration in research, including transnational research funding opportunities; transnational research programmes; and joint research facilities and institutes involving international collaboration;
  3. Contribute to the implementation of the University’s engagement with Europe on initiatives such as Horizon 2020, Erasmus for All and the Bologna Process within the College and its Schools;
  4. Ensuring full and active engagement of the College with University initiatives on staff and student mobility;
  5. Supporting and promoting recruitment of international faculty
  6. Ensuring full and active engagement of the College with the University’s development of collaborative educational provision at an international level, including any overseas campuses whether taken forward individually by Cardiff or in collaboration with other institutions, organisations or governments.

The Dean of International will be expected to travel overseas as necessary in the fulfilment of the requirements of the role.

Strong academic Track record in research and teaching

Proven track record in International and Engagement activities

Demonstrable experience of Academic Leadership with the ability to think strategically and engender a shared vision

A proven track record of building effective and productive internal and external working relationships

Involvement with relevant professional communities

A wide breadth of understanding of current activities being undertaken within the area and requirements for the future

An understanding of developments within the International and Engagement arena in Higher Education across the breath of subject disciplines

Good negotiating skills, flexibility and open mindedness

This role will be 0.6FTE and fixed term for three years. The role holder will receive an annual one off non-pensionable allowance of £4,500.
