MARY’S MEALS
Chartwells are delighted to partner Mary’s Meals charity in our Ethical School Meal programme.
The objective of the partnership is to:
- Offer Schools access to a project that will enhance student’s Global Citizenship awareness
- Raise the importance of taking a School Lunch
- Increase number of student’s in Lewisham Schools taking a lunch
- Provide a hot meal and education to children in third world countries
Mary’s Meal’s is an international movement to set up school feeding projects in communities where poverty and hunger prevent children from gaining an education. 93p in every pound donated is spent on the feeding programme.
Mary’s Meals began in Malawi in 2002 when Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, the charity CEO and founder met a young woman called Emma who was dying of AIDS. She was sitting on themud floor of her hut surrounded by her children. He asked her oldest son, a boy of 14, what his dreams were in life – “To have enough food to eat and go to school one day” was his stark reply. This inspired the Mary’s Meal’s campaign.
Chartwells have recently funded the building of 2 feeding kitchens in two Schools in Malawi, Goliati and ChimvuPrimary Schools. We hope through our meal incentive programme to be able to provide meals for the 3,000 children who attend these Schools. We have an aim that we can take a party from Lewisham Schools to Malawi to visit the Schools that we support in February 2013.
The campaign is simple. For every 20 Meals Chartwells serve in our Lewisham Schools Chartwells donate a Mary’s Meal. All the Schools need to do is sign up to this campaign and encourage as many children in their School as possible to take a School lunch.
To sign up all you need to do is to email confirming that you wish your school to be included in this initiative. Mary’s Meals will then include your School on their Termly newsletter and the Chartwells team will discuss with you the variety of Mary’s Meals engagement activities we can supply to your Students.
For the Autumn Term we are supporting Mary’s Meals with a Back Pack project campaign. We hope to be able to collect 3,000 Back Packs between September – December 2012 to send to children in Mary’s Meals Schools across the world. We hope that you will support us in this campaign- more information will be available in September 2012. More information can be found of the Mary’s Meals website.
