DCU Hurling Club Round up

Fresher A Championship DCU 2-9 WIT 4-13

DCU came strong out of the blocks against a fancied WIT team in Alfie Byrne Road on Tuesday. DCU captained by dual player Eoghan Smyth were well motivated coming into the game and got the better of the early exchanges, putting the WIT forwards under serious pressure, with strong tackling from Ciaran McEvoy and Sean O'Brien down the centre. The opening goal of the game from Seamie O'Sullivan, when he rounded his man and fired to the net. A number of other fine scores were taken by the industrious Ciaran O'Hanrahan and Gavin Bailey in he opening half, while a penalty won by the lively O'Sullivan, was blasted over the bar by Cian Boland. A goal from a penalty at the other end from the WIT goalkeeper left DCU trailing by two points at half time.

A strong third quarter by WIT allowed them to open a considerable gap as they rattled in three more goals, this despite the fine performance of Tom Quinn in goal. These goals did not deter DCU who battled right to the death with Kev O'Flynn working tirelessly all game and an excellent goal from Eoghan Smyth created some chance of a revival but WIT managed to hold firm and progress to the next round of the Championship.

Fresher B Championship DCU 'B' 1-6 WIT 'B' 2-9

The second game on the double bill, seen the same two colleges in action. Another tight affair was on offer, with again DCU starting the stronger with Sean O'Cuanachan causing bother for the WIT defense from the outset. A flurry of scores just before half time seen WIT enter the second half marginally ahead.

The second half continued as a tense game with little between the sides, an injury to Cian Murray who was hurling well dented DCU's chances. But the scores seemed to arrive a little easier for WIT, despite the effort of Ian O'Donnell and many other throughout the game. WIT managed to snatch a goal towards the end of the game and put a gloss on the scoreline, as it finished 2-9 to 1-6.
