Storytelling for Beginners - Workshops Overview

Day 1 - Traditional Storytelling Workshop

Saturday 5th August

Workshop led by Carl Gough

Carl has been a professional storyteller since 2012. His skills and approach were honed through a varied 25 year career as a presenter, guide, informal educator, teacher, research scientist and community development officer. Carl established Swansea Storytelling Club and is a trustee with Beyond the Border International Storytelling festival. ‘I love seeing people discover their untapped abilities and a stronger storytelling voice.’

Intentions for the day

Day 1 has a focus on traditional tales (folk tales, wonder tales, myth, legends, fairy tales etc). The emphasis is on laying the foundations, revealing how easily you can work with story and make it your own. Storytelling isn’t about memorisation of words - it involves going into the story, living it, breathing it so it becomes part of you. The purpose of this workshop is about opening doors to help you tell traditional tales and explore your own connection to such stories. You may even discover new perspectives that will surprise you.

Day 2 - Autobiographical Storytelling Workshop

Sunday 6th August

Workshop Led by Eleanor Shaw

Eleanor Shaw has worked in education and community arts for the last 20 years. Founder and host of Spoken Word Saturday at Ffwrnes Theatre, co-hosts Swansea Storytelling Club and works as a professional storyteller, community theatre practitioner, lecturer and facilitator nationally and internationally. ‘My passion is telling stories from my heart, my soul and my life journey’

Intentions for the day

Do you like telling stories? Would you like to learn how to explore memories and turn them into a story? Would you like to listen to others and listen to their stories? If so this workshop is for you. Together, we will create a safe, relaxed and informal space to share and listen to our stories.

Late afternoon there will be an opportunity to work on your story with Carl Gough, David Pitt & Eleanor Shaw or just take the time to walk through the woods or sit by the lake to really breathe your story in!

Post workshop Celebration - In the early evening of Sunday there will be an opportunity to invite friends and family to come and gather to listen to your story, whether it is from Day 1 where you explored, or Day 2 where your memory became a story.
