Busby Primary School

and Nursery Class Newsletter

March 2017

Dear Parent/Carer,

We are approaching the end of another busy and exciting term at Busby Primary. I look forward to seeing parents at the STEM Showcase on Friday 24th March where pupils will share what they have learned over the past few weeks. Miss Harris and P6 are also busy preparing the Spring Service, ‘Happiness’, which will be held at Busby Parish Church, 9.45am on Friday 31st March. All parents, carers and friends of Busby are welcome to join us.

Nursery & Early Level News

Mrs Grey

We are very sad to be saying goodbye to Mrs. Grey at the Spring Holiday. Mrs. Grey has been a wonderful member of the Early Years team at Busby and we are sorry to see her go. We wish her every success in her new job.

Nursery Fund

Thank you to all families who contribute to our Nursery Fund – our science workshops from Mini Professors have been very successful and we were able to pay with this from the fund to enhance the children’s time at Nursery. Shoogalie Road Theatre Company will visit the Nursery on Monday 27th March (pm) and Tuesday 28th March (am) to tell the story of ‘The Jungle Book’. Adults are encouraged to join us for the show.

STEM Fortnight

We are currently in the middle of our annual celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. We have been learning about ‘Space’ and have enjoyed meeting visitors who have come into the Nursery to talk about their jobs. It’s not too late to get involved - if you know someone who can be part of our learning, please speak to a member of staff.

POPS

We all know that our ‘wee ones’ can be tricky at times. If you are experiencing challenging behavior at home, please share it with us and consider the very successful POPS programme. Details are displayed in the cloakroom or ask member of staff.

Daffodil Tea

We are looking forward to the start of Spring, the season that brings our Daffodil Tea to Nursery. As a fundraiser for Marie Curie, we will offer entertainment and cake – a winning combination! The times are 11.00-11.50am for parents of children in the morning and 2.00-2.50pm for parents of children who attend the afternoon session.

Independence

We would greatly appreciate it if parent who are buying new shoes for Nursery would avoid shoes with laces as the children are unable to manage changing independently, something we constantly encourage.

Muddy Movers

To complement our focus on outdoor learning, we are implementing a ‘Muddy Movers’ programme to develop physical skills and confidence in young children. Staff will issue information on this development and anyone interested should speak to Mrs. MacLeod or Mrs. Branco.

School News

Polling Day – We have confirmation that the school will be closed to pupils on Thursday 4th May 2017.

Parent Council News

The P7’s organised a highly successful film afternoon for all pupils to watch ‘The Trolls’ with drinks and popcorn supplied and raised the fantastic sum of £214!

The next Parent Council meeting is on Thursday 23rd March at 6.30pm at Williamwood High School, all are welcome to attend. If you would like to raise any issues with the school at this meeting then please contact your class representative or .

French Family Fun Evening

Our French Family fun evening was a great success. Families chose two from a choice of six French themed activities. Miss Wight led the 'French Bake Off' as pupils and parents tried to make the perfect crepe. Mrs. Oswald asked questions on French culture in the quiz and Miss Woods called out the numbers in the Lotto game - in French of course! Mr. Weir was in charge of 'Le Grand Design' as families attempted to build the Eiffel Tower from spaghetti and marshmallows. Miss Hunter invited families to 'Show Me the Monet' as they attempted to recreate the famous 'Water Lily Pond' painting and Mrs. Robinson refereed games of Petanque in the main hall.

With prizes on offer for all activities, the competitive sides of our parents and pupils were on full display! It was a fun evening and we hope all families who attended had a great time.

FairTrade Breakfast

On Friday 3rd March, pupils in P6 and P7 were invited to a fairtrade breakfast which was prepared and served by the Fairtrade committee. Our thanks go to all parents and pupils who supported us and to Mrs. Sanderson for the delicious banana muffins.

Cross Country Championships

A team of 16 pupils from P5 to P7 represented Busby at Rouken Glen Park on Thursday 2nd March in the annual ERC Cross Country Championships. All pupils were a credit to the school, pushing themselves physically to complete a gruelling, muddy course. All those involved should be extremely proud of their individual and team performances. They were all amazing! Our thanks also go to Mrs. McLennan, Mrs. Borland, Mrs. Kerr, Mrs. McLean and Miss Lawson for their efforts with the after school running club.

Euroquiz Heats

Well done to Adam, Emma, Natasha, Susannah and Maya who represented Busby at the East Renfrewshire 'Euroquiz' heat on Wednesday 8th March. The team came in second place to Springhill and Auchenback Primary School. We are all very proud of them.

Glasgow Music Festival

Miss Lawson took her choir to compete at the Glasgow Music Festival on Tuesday 14th March. The girls sang beautifully with the adjudicators commenting that "the tempo nuances were well handled" and it was "a very well constructed programme." Well done to Miss Lawson and the choir.

STEM Fortnight

We are currently in the midst of our celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Everyone is very excited by our ‘Star Wars’ theme and thoroughly enjoyed meeting the visiting Storm Trooper who introduced this year’s theme last Monday. We have been very fortunate to be supported by parents who work in STEM industries. Mr. Walker delighted pupils from Nursery-P4 with his robotics demonstration. Mr. Wallace and Mr. McKeown from Scottish Power spoke to P2, P6/7 and Miss Lawson’s Skills Academy class about sustainability and wind turbines. Mr. Findlay and Mr. McKellar visited all pupils in Primary 4 and 5 to speak about their jobs and give a demonstration of some of the technology they use at work. Mrs. Addie visited P6 as a starter to their Microscopy topic and Mr. Nicklin introduced DNA to Primary 7. We cannot thank our parents enough for all their support during our STEM fortnight.

All classes have either visited Busby Library or will visit later this week – Peter the librarian is a keen Star Wars fan and has engaged enthusiastically with us. Pupils in P1-P3 enjoyed a trip to the Science Centre on Thursday 16th March, which included a visit to the Planetarium. On Monday 20th March, ‘Sky Lab’ visited our P4-P7 pupils and led a workshop on Forces and Flight. All children made their own glider and took it home. We had a pop-up Planetarium in school on Wednesday and our fantastic STEM showcase on Friday 24th March. We look forward to welcoming family and friends from 1.45pm on Friday.

Our lunch ladies provided a delicious ‘Star Wars’ themed buffet on Tuesday 21st March – the food and decorations looked out of this world! Our thanks to the Card Factory in Newton Mearns and Jane Abraham who donated life size Storm Trooper balloons.

School Trips

P1 and P2 have enjoyed trips to Scotland Street Museum over February and March. Primary 2 were finding what life was like for children during the Victorian era and P1 were looking at Toys through the years. Primary 1 pupils also visited ‘Build a Bear’ at Braehead to see a bear being made. They even persuaded me to allow them to buy one as a class mascot!

Primary 6 pupils had a wonderful time in Edinburgh for their overnight stay. They visited Dynamic Earth, the National Museum of Scotland, Camera Obscura and The Royal Observatory. It was a very busy trip and all pupils and staff really enjoyed it. Please look at the website under Events and Excursions and the P6 and P6/7 blogs for more details and photos.
