Computer Skills

  • I can competently build and use computers and have extensive experience using Microsoft Office, Windows ’98 and Windows 2000 (Professional and Server).
  • I have designed and published a web page at containing animations, links and pictures.
  • I have also made use of Visual Basic during my A/S Level in Computing.
  • I know how to implement Red Hat Linux 7 and remotely administer this system.
  • I have undertaken a one day Microsoft Access course to learn how to use this powerful program.

Placement Experience September 1998-September 1999.

  • I completed my placement year working at Racal Translink in Croydon in their telecoms division.
  • My primary duties concerned the provision of a managed service between Brighton and Havant. This included continuous use of computer databases and working as part of a team to produce work packages.
  • I gained vast practical experience while working for Racal and was involved in several site visits, where I helped to install cabling on railway lines on the south coast.
  • I trained in the splicing of fibre optic network cables and consequently was involved in the installation of part of a fibre optic network in Sutton.

Interests and Activities
  • During my first year at university I was a course representative. This involved dedication and attending meetings outside of lectures.
  • I have recently taken up snowboarding as a pastime and enjoy other sports such as playing badminton and swimming. I am also a keen cyclist and have completed the London to Brighton cycle race.
  • I have also undertaken a car maintenance course on which I learnt basic skills to allow me to service a car. This ranged from oil changes to larger tasks such as the changing of brake pads and discs.
  • I have an interest in building and maintenance of computer hardware. I have built several systems and spend some of my spare time advising and helping friends to use or upgrade their computers.
  • As part of my ongoing development I participated in two workshops. The first was to develop teambuilding skills while the second focused on key points when making a presentation. The two sessions enabled me to hone my existing skills and build upon the foundations I learnt at University.
