Year 5 Sycamore Class Homework

Date given: Thursday22ndFebruary 2018

Date due: Wednesday28thFebruary 2018

Dear Sycamore Class and Parents,

We hope you all had a lovely rest over half term and managed to enjoy some of the sunshine! We haveanother busy half term ahead of us as we continue our Literacy focus on Mary Poppins and our Maths focus on fractions. The children have all come back to school enthusiastic and ready to write their very own Mary Poppins chapters. We have been completing scaffolded writing sessions embedding our unit skill of ‘ing’ openers in our Literacy lessons and so far, the children have done very well at structuring their ideas into a mixture of sentence types and lengths. In our Maths lessons, we have recognised the similarities between fractions and decimals and have converted fractions into decimals by dividing the numerator by the denominator. We have also completed some problem solving activities where the children have been able to apply their understanding. Please remember that it is World Book Day next Thursday – the 1st of March – and all KS2 children will be dressing up as a character from Harry Potter.

English and Topic

Plan your own Classic Fiction Chapter – our chapter writing for Mary Poppins is now well underway but to ensure that you are familiar with the genre of Classic Texts, we would now like you to plan and write another chapter. This time, we would like your main character to be someone who was linked to the Suffragette movement for example, Christabel Pankhurst, Sylvia Pankhurst or Emmeline Pankhurst. We would like you to plan your chapters using a ‘story map’ or by using the ‘chunk a plot’ method we have used in class. In your plans, try to include the names of the characters and settings that you are using and key words and phrases that you could include in your stories. We will be writing our very own cross curricular stories in class. Can you think of any expanded noun phrases that you could include or any sentences starting with ‘ing’?

Maths

Task 1 –We would like you to complete the enclosed sheet focusing on simplifying fractions. You have all worked so hard on these in class. Remember to work through these steps…I can find the highest possible times table that fits into both the numerator and denominator. I can divide the numerator and denominator by this times table. I can see whether my fraction can be simplified any further by completing steps 1 and 2 again.

Task 2 – Mathletics tasks have been set for you to work on fractions linked to our maths activities in class.

Other things to remember:

  • You must practise your times tables daily - they are currently hindering your Maths progress and only you can make this better.
  • Reading Eggs – try to get onto Reading Eggs as often as you can. It really is a lot of fun!!
  • Spellodrome – remember you can access Spellodrome through Mathletics.

Thank you for continuing to work so hard! ?
