Lesson Plan

Unit Topic: Science

Grade: 4th

Lesson Topic/Theme: Animal Classification

Lesson Objectives:

1.Students will be able to correctly identify the 6 basic animal groups.

2.Students will be able to know the characteristics of each classified animal.

3.Students will be able to identify the specific groups different animals belong to.

Instructional Technique:Presentation/lecture in question and answer format

Instructional Materials: Computer/Laptop for presentation and quiz, and notes from presentation

Theoretical Perspective:It is important that students know what groups different animals belong in so they can learn how a food chain works and where different animals live as well. Animals are crucial to our planet, all species help control the population of the environment they live in from preying on other animals.

Procedure:

  1. Introductory Activity:

Before starting the lesson the teacher will start by asking the students to come up with an animal of their choosing, and to think of characteristics to describe that animal. Then the class will have a discussion sharing the students ideas.

B. Step By Step:

-The teacher will start by giving a lecture using powerpoint to explains the characteristics of animals, animal groups, and what they eat.

-The teacher will instruct the students to take notes from the presentation.

-The teacher will explain the online quiz they will be taking to show what they’ve learned from the lesson.

-The teacher will direct the students on how to get to the quiz and how to use the website.

-The teacher will remind the students on a separate sheet of paper to tally up the amount of right and wrong questions they receive on each question the first time they answer it.

-The teacher will make sure everyone understands the directions and will have the students begin the quiz.

C. Closure:

-Collect the sheet of paper the students used to tally up the amount of incorrect and correct treis per question. This will tell the teacher which topics the students need more explanation on or if the students understood everything taught in the lesson.

D. Adaptations:

-For students that have trouble with reading comprehension a teacher aid will read the quiz questions out loud to those students.

-For students that can’t use computers the teacher will print out a hard copy of the quiz.

E.Homework

-Make a web chart for the six animal classification groups using different animals than the ones talked about in the powerpoint presentation. Make sure to include one characteristic for each group.

Evaluation:

  1. Students will be able to know the characteristics of each classified animal.

-The teacher will determine if this objective is met by how well the students do on questions 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7.

2. Students will be able to identify the specific groups different animals belong to.

-The teacher will determine if this objective is met by how well the students do on questions 1, 2, and 4.
