JUBILEE YEAR and ABORTION: There has been quite a bit of media attention over the past couple of days regarding Pope Francis granting priests throughout the world permission to absolve the sin of abortion during the Jubilee Year of Mercy (Dec. 8, 2015 - Nov. 20, 2016).
Abortion is indeed a grave sin. It also, per Canon 1398 of the Code of Canon Law, incurs a latae sententiae excommunication (provided all other conditions are met). We rejoice that the Holy Father has granted priests throughout the world the ability to forgive this sin in the confessional and pray that this gesture would bring many women the healing that can only come from the mercy granted by God. We would also like to take this opportunity to point out that, for many years now, the bishop of Charlotte has granted all priests of the Diocese of Charlotte the faculties to both forgive this sin in Sacramental Confession and to lift the penalty of excommunication (if, indeed, it has been incurred):
“To confessors to remit in the internal forum the Latae Sententiae (automatic) penalty established by the law but not yet declared, provided the remission is not reserved to the Apostolic See. This faculty may be exercised by the confessor only within the confines of the Diocese of Charlotte, and on behalf of any person regardless of that person’s residence or the place where the penalty was incurred (Canon 1355, #2). The confessor may absolve from the penalty of excommunication: apostates, heretics and schismatics (Canons 1364, #2; 1354, #1), as well as those who have procured an abortion (Canon 1398)."
BIBLE STUDY RETURNS Bible Study will return on September 15th. They will meet at 7:00 PM in the Parish Hall. All are welcome!
PRIESTS’ RETIREMENT & BENEFITS COLLECTION: The dedicated priests who served us in the past now deserve to live out their retirement years in dignity. Our parish has been assessed $7,232.57 for the priests’ retirement and benefits plans. This amount is slightly less that two times the regular weekend offertory. Please be as generous as you can in this second collection, which will be taken in our parish next weekend, September 19/20. Additional envelopes are available in the parish office.
FIGHTING MS: Parishioner MARY ANN SACCO, will ride in this year's
"TOUR TO TANGLEWOOD" BIKE RIDE in honor of parishioner, Arlene Hennessy. They will be collecting donations after all masses on Sept. 2627th. Checks can be made payable to National MS Society. Thank you for your help in fighting this terrible disease.
