Background, Context, and Purpose:
Lesson Goal(s) (curriculum/standards based):
1. Students will explain different relationships among living organisms. (Symbiosis)
Lesson Objectives (measurable performance):
When student’s legs are tied together or their sight is taken away, students will attempt to complete
the given tasks of walking through rows and pouring a glass of water.
a. Students will demonstrate physically and orally that they understand the concept of symbiosis
Materials Needed:
Rope, pitcher of water, glass, towel, and blindfold
A. The Lesson:
1.Introduction(getting attention, relating to past experiences/knowledge,
creatinga need to know, sharing objective, in general terms):
Start out by asking the class; have they ever helped their parents with the dishes or
worked on homework with a friend? Do you think it is easier to do the task by yourself or is it
easier to do it with a partner? By doing today’s activity, you will have a better understanding of
the relationship concept of symbiosis.
- Methods (include adaptations and extensions for different needs of learners):
--Use the inquiry discovery method
--Ask two students from the class to come up to the front for a demonstration.
-- Give the students a string to tie their legs together.
--Inform the students “the task of maneuvering up and down the rows of the classroom.”
--Have the class observe the student’s performance.
--Ask the class for two more volunteers.
--Explain that one will lack the use of their arms and the other will be blindfolded.
--Inform the students “ the task of pouring the glass of water without the vision of one student
and the arms of the other.”
--Have the class observe the student’s performance.
--Discuss what the student’s discovered from the activities. What did they think and how could
they improve it?
3.Concept Closure (providing students with opportunities to reflect and express
what they are learning):
Based on the activities have the class orally describe what the term symbiosis is.
