Case Analysis – The Richards Family

Review the case scenario presented below. Based on the information that is provided, prepare a case analysis and report that responds to the seven tasks listed. An evaluation rubric is provided for each task.

Family Members:

The Richards family includes Leonard, 14, Amanda, 9, the father, Fred, age 50, the mother, Linda, age 46. Linda’s father, Edward, age 72, has been living with the Richards family since his wife Marie died two years ago. Edward and his wife Marie were married for 50 years and had three children, Linda, 46, Joan, 44, and Peter, 40, all of which are currently married with children. Fred’s dad, John age 84, currently lives in an assisted living facility near the Richards’ family home. Fred’s mother, Elizabeth, age 80, lives in a nursing home and has Alzheimer disease. Fred has one older sister, Rita, age 59 and has always lived alone.

Amanda is Joan’s daughter, Linda’s sister. Amanda’s biological mother and father were murdered when Amanda was 3 years old. Joan and her husband, Frank, were apparently involved with a street gang, in a different city. The murders were thought to have been related to drug dealing. Amanda has been living with her aunt Linda since the death of her parents.

Leonard is Fred and Linda’s son. Linda and Fred have been married for 15 years. Fred has two other children from a previous marriage, Jim age 24 and Jill age 20. Both have been living with their mother, Susan, age 45 who is now remarried to John, age 48 who lives in another State.

Presenting Problems:

Leonard, 14, is being referred to your agency by his DFC caseworker. The presenting problem is that Leonard reportedly has been sexually abused by his step-brother Jim, Fred’s son from a previous marriage while staying with the Richards family a few years earlier.

Fred, 50, was referred to your agency by his attorney. Approximately two week ago, Fred was arrested while operating his vehicle under the influence of alcohol. This is the third time Fred was arrested and charged with driving under the influence.

Amanda, 9, was referred to your agency by her school social worker. Debbie, the school social worker, reports that within the past 3 months, Amanda has been having behavioral problems. She often will have temper tantrums in the classroom and with peers. She is often absent from school. Whenever she gets angry, she threatens to run away or to tell her aunt how badly her teachers treat her.

Linda, age 46, is currently not employed outside the home. She has recently been laid-off by her employer as an administrative assistant due to major cut backs with employer. The Richards family has moved several times in the past five years due to various financial difficulties. Linda does not report having any problems.
