Self-employed (current position)

Deputy Leader: Smart Fishing Initiative: April 2010 to May 31st 2014

Lead, motivate, and steer the WWF global Network and external partners towards achieving high impact conservation targets in line with the best available scientific information. Secured external funding, oversaw seven figure budgets, and sought to foster and maintain strategic collaborations among various organisations, such as the United Nations, business and industry, and the finance sector. Maintained a position at the forefront of global environmental thinking by formulating, commissioning, overseeing, and engaging in conservation research (e.g. traceability, IUU, supply chains, bycatch, fishing impacts etc) and informed the strategic direction of future conservation initiatives, especially in relation to resilience building in marine systems, human change, food security and sustainability, and concomitant socio-economic considerations.

Employer: WWF International, Switzerland.

Acting Leader: Bycatch Initiative: August 2009 to April 2010 &

Manager: Bycatch Initiative: April 2006 to August 2009

Managed and later led the WWF Bycatch Initiative and acted as a global spokesperson on marine conservation issues in line with the programme. Identified, promoted and supported key national and international opportunities for WWF offices to participate in fisheries conservation and supported WWF offices involved in the planning and implementation of such work. Was responsible for adding value to ongoing resource management work by coalescing WWF teams and external partners to achieve conservation wins bigger than the sum of their parts. Two notable highlights in this role include 1) leading the creation and management of a team which went on to achieve substantial wins in North Atlantic bycatch reduction, and 2) led and managed an effort to redefine an aspect of fisheries conservation that was published in the journal Marine Policy thanks to a peer review report stating ‘this is a landmark paper’. Took this message to the international policy arena to lobby the UN to adopt the proposed measures. Achieved a major milestone in December 2009 when draft UN guidelines adopted a definition in line with our proposal. Independent review of the programme concluded that its conservation achievements were “remarkable”.

Employer: WWF International, Switzerland

Fisheries Project Officer: May 2005 to March 2006

Responsible for initiating and developing projects to help the fishing industry adopt more sustainable fishing practices and securing related funding from the UK’s then Department of Environment, Fisheries and Rural Affairs.

Employer: SW Pesca Ltd, Cornwall, UK

Inshore Fisheries Development Officer: September 2003 to May 2005

Played a key role in the introduction of a brand new fisheries management plan and directed fishermen towards more sustainable fishing practices. Towards this end, I secured funding for projects and surveys, conducted research aboard commercial fishing vessels, wrote reports and delivered presentations. This was a high profile position and I regularly liaised with other government and non-government organisations, semi-state bodies and a wide range of stakeholders, including local fishing communities. In this role it was incumbent upon me to motivate and adopt a forward thinking leadership approach.

Employer: Irish Sea Fisheries Board, Dublin, Ireland

Fisheries Research Assistant: April 2003 to September 2003

Worked closely with industry in the field to research and report on the status of brown crab (Cancer pagurus) fisheries off the west coast of Ireland. This research helped to determine effective management plans to ensure their sustainable exploitation.

Employer: Trinity College – Dublin in partnership with the Irish Sea Fisheries Board, Dublin, Ireland

Marine Biology Consultant: May 2002 to December 2002

Field tested, reported and advised on different trawl design innovations aimed at reducing fisheries’ impacts and the effects of fishing gear on the ecology of the marine benthos (sea bed structure and related animal assemblages). This research helped inform the Irish Sea Fisheries board on the best available technology to fish sustainably.

Self-employed

Project Manager: REDUCE (Reduction of the Environmental Impact of Trawling on the Marine Ecosystem): June 2001 to March 2002

This project involved managing an international team from five countries. The project’s aim was to develop and test fishing gear innovations to help minimize the impact of towed fishing gear on the marine benthic environment. This was a major project, the management of which contributed, eight years later, to the original Belgium REDUCE Project team winning the WWF Smart Gear runner-up prize for their fishing gear that reduced harmful impacts to the seabed.
