Evaluation
Marks in this course will be cumulative over the entire year rather than splitting the course into sections or terms. This means that marks may change drastically from the early stages of the course as more work is completed.
Cumulative marks follow a system where category percentages are attached to a variety of assessments. Cumulative marks provide a ‘snapshot’ of a student’s progress at any time in the course without locking in a grade prior to the conclusion of the course. Using this grading system will enhance the InSchool program as parents and students can get an accurate account of the marks after assessments are graded.
*The following percentages and their meanings are what will appear on this year’s report card:
90-100%The student demonstrates excellent or outstanding performance in relation to the expected learning outcomes for this course.
80-89%The student demonstrates very good performance in relation to the expected learning outcomes for this course.
70-79%The student demonstrates good performance in relation to the expected learning outcomes for this course.
60-69%The student demonstrates satisfactory performance in relation to the expected learning outcomes for this course.
50-59%The student demonstrates minimally acceptable performance in relation to the expected learning outcomes for this course.
Below 50%The student has not met minimum requirements in relation to the expected learning outcomes for this course.
* Please note that the following marking scheme is subject to change.
Tests 35%
Quizzes 10%
Major Assignments20%
Tasks and in-class work15%
Mid-term10%
Exam10%
* One of the most important parts of grade 9 Math is completion of homework. Only students who do their homework consistently and with diligence will be successful in this course. Work is assigned on a daily basis that is to be completed for the next class.
Class Behaviour
The following are a few expectations for classroom behaviour.
- Come to class prepared! Bring your binder, books, pens, loose leaf, calculator, and any other materials we are working with.
- Treat everyone with RESPECT. This means:
- Showing up to class on time
- Understanding that it is okay for people to disagree with your views
- Waiting your turn to speak
- Using appropriate, polite language and…
- Being prepared for discussions.
- Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Chances are others in the class are wondering the same thing.
- All smart devices are to be on silent or vibrate mode during class time.
- Students are permitted to listen to smart devices in class only during independent work time given in class.
- Headphones and / or earpieces are to be removed during lessons and class discussions.
- Food is not allowed in class unless otherwise specified.
Late Assignments
All assignments and classroom tasks and activities are to be handed in on time. If a major assignment is not submitted on the due date, the student will be required to attend up to 5 extra work sessions which will be held during lunch hour. If after 5 sessions the assignment is not completed, the student must submit all of the work they have done to that point (part marks will be given).
In addition, any assignments that are submitted after the due date will be subject to a penalty of 5% of the value of the assignment, per day, to a maximum of 25%.
There will be a 2 week period where late assignments will be accepted. After this terminal deadline, a score of zero will be entered for the assignment if it is not handed in.
If you do miss a deadline, you must hand in your assignment on the next school day, whether you have my class on that day or not.
Make-up tests will be arranged for those students who have missed a test, but only if the student provides a written note from home explaining the reason why the test was not written on the originally scheduled test day.
Copying another student’s work and submitting it as your own and failing to provide footnote references when quoting another author or authors are both examples of plagiarism and will be dealt with in the following manner:
- Submitting another student’s work and calling it your own will result in the loss of the total mark for that particular assignment.
Contact
An open line of communication between teachers and parents / guardians is very important. Hopefully, this will help each student reach their full potential. I will be contacting you if I am concerned with your child’s progress, behaviour or if work is not being completed.
