Academic career

Costanzo Ranci graduated in Political Science at the University of Milan, 1983, cum laude. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Trento, Italy (1990). Between 1989 and 1992 he took many research grants from the Department of Sociology at the University of Milan. He was Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Sociology, University of Milanin 1991-92, and Visiting Scholar at the School of Social Welfare, University of California, Berkeley, in 1992-93, with a grant from CNR-NATO "Advanced Fellowships Programme". Since 2003 he teaches Sociology and Social Policy at the Polytechnic of Milan, Department of Architecture and Planning.

Academic positions

Costanzo Ranci is currently Full Professor in Economic Sociology at the Polytechnic of Milan. He teaches Sociology (BA) and Urban Sociology (MA in Urban Planning). He is board member of the SPUD (Spatial Planning and Urban Development)Ph.D program (at the Polytechnic) and of the URBEUR (Urban and Local European Studies) Ph.D. program (at the Universityof Milano-Bicocca). He currently teaches a Ph.D. courseon “Global cities”. He is member of the Board of Alta Scuola Politecnica, where he coordinates a Winter School about “Innovation and Society”.

At the Polytechnic of Milan he founded and currently leads the Research Lab in Social Policy. He is also in the scientific board of the Rassegna Italiana di Sociologia, the most relevant Italian scientific journal in Sociology. He is also member of the scientific boards of La Rivista delle Politiche. He has served as reviewer of many national and international journal such as Journal of European Social Policy, Journal of Social Policy, Policy and Politics, Rassegna Italiana di Sociologia, Social Policy and Administration, Stato e mercato.

Research activity

Costanzo Ranci hase published numerous articles and books on social policy and the welfare state, social inequalities and new social risks, the third sector and voluntary organizations, urban social problems. His interests include the following fields:

a)social inequalities and vulnerability: the growth of new social risks and new forms of vulnerability as a consequence of the crisis of the fordist model of organization of society;

b)social policy: privatization of public services, new forms of governance, the growth of social care markets, reforms in long-term care, local welfare systems;

c)urban problems: competitiveness and social cohesion in European cities;

d)voluntary action and the third sector: the management of nonprofit organizations, the involvement of private bodies in public policy.

He is currently involved in many research projects both at the national and international levels. Among them there are:

“The political economy of the new middle class in Italy”, rereach funded by Consiglio delle Scienze Sociali (Social Science Council), 2009-2011

“Impact of local welfare systems on female labour force participation and social cohesion” (FLOWS), UE 7 Framework Program, 2011-2014.

“Welfare innovations at the local level in favour of cohesion” (WILCO), UE 7 Framework Program, 2011-2013.

“Reforms in long-term care policies in EU countries”, coordinator of an international research group; project finded by Spi-Cgil, 2009-2011

“Social cohesion and competitiveness in six European cities”, comparativeresearch finded by the Chamber of Commerceof Milan, 2008-2012
