Dear Parents/Guardians,

I am your child’s SEI (Secondary English Instruction) teacher this year. Your student has me for two periods of the school day to receive instruction in English Language Development. Below I have outlined the course for you.

Curriculum Components/Related Activities/Materials

Essentially, we will be working on Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking English. I will assess students to establish their level of English proficiency and then students will receive appropriate instruction to help them to progress in their ability to interact meaningfully with peers and teachers, learn how the English language works and practice foundational literacy skills. Students will you a variety of tools including text books and computer programs.

In addition, students will focus on:

Self-Awareness:Developawarenessofproperbehaviorindifferentsituations

Goals:Understandhowtocalculategradepointaverageandsetrealistic,measurablegoals.

Collaboration:Participateinarangeofcollaborativediscussion (pairs,groupsandclassroom) withdiversepartners.

SuggestedSchoolSupplies

  1. 2 ½to 3 inch 3 ringbinder
  2. Pencilpouchwithatleast 3 pencils, 2 pens,aneraser,andhighlighter
  3. 20-25 sheetsofcollegelinedpaper
  4. 6 dividers (oneforeachclass)

Classroom Expectations:

In order to create a place where all can be successful, I have clear behavior expectations and guidelines for success. We have been working on three personal standards:

  1. Showing respect
  2. Making good decisions
  3. Solving problems

Students who have a difficult time following the above are given a warning and three chances to reset themselves for learning. On the fifth redirect, the student will go to a “buddy room” to refocus their behavior. If a student returns from the buddy room unready to rejoin they class, they will be given a referral to the office and removed from class for the rest of that period. If a student is disrespectful or defiant they can be sent straight to the office without the above interventions.

The purpose of the above is to keep the classroom a safe and successful place to be.

Assignments/Grading/Absences

1. Much of the grade is dependant on classroom activities and assignments.

2. Students have a standing homework Monday –Thursday, the Weekly Reading Log. Students read for a minimum of 20 minutes (IN ENGLISH) outside of class and fill out a very quick reading log. The log is due every Monday..

3. Occasionally, I will assign some skill practice in the form of a worksheet or have students work on a project we started in class. Check the planner daily to see what the homework is.

10%--Classwork and participation
10% Projects and writing assignments

80%--Assessments

Thank you so much for your ongoing support. If you have any questions about the class or how you can provide support for your child at home, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Kathy Passmore
