Kindergarten Curriculum

The Kindergarten program at Collier Primary School is developed using The Western Australian Kindergarten Curriculum Guideline. The Guidelinesassist learners to develop general capabilitiesthat encompass the knowledge, skills, attitudes and dispositions that support learners in the 21st Century.To be successful learners, children will be encouraged to be confident, creative problem solvers immersedin environments where multiple perspectives and ways of working are explored.The learning and development areas describe the breadth and depth of knowledge, skills, attitudes anddispositions for the Kindergarten year. Connections to the content of the Pre-primary curriculum in theWestern Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline have been made so that teachers, parents andcolleagues see the transitional yet continuous nature of learning across the early years.The five areas of learning and development are based on the five outcomes of the Early Years Learning Framework (Commonwealth ofAustralia, 2009). They are:

• IDENTITY - Children have a strong sense of identity.

CONNECTING & CONTRIBUTING - Children are connected with and contribute to their world.

• WELLBEING - Children have a strong sense of wellbeing.

LEARNING and THINKING - Children are confident and involved learners.

• COMMUNICATING - Children are effective communicators.

The content in the next section is offered as a guide for teachers to modify and/or extend in order to meetthe needs of their learning community. As children are growing and developing at different rates and cometo Kindergarten with vastly different experiences, all children are not expected to achieve all the content described in the next section by the end of the Kindergarten year.

Pre-primary to Year 6 Curriculum

The Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians (2008) and the Australian Curriculum identify eight learning areas:

  • English;
  • Mathematics;
  • Science (including Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Earth and Space Sciences, Physical Sciences);
  • Humanities and Social Sciences (including Civics and Citizenship, Economics and Business, Geography, History);
  • The Arts (including Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music, Visual Arts);
  • Languages;
  • Health and Physical Education; and
  • Technologies (including Design and Technology, Digital Technologies).

The Australian Curriculum (Pre-primary to Year 10) is being developed by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) in three phases:

  • Phase 1 comprises English, Mathematics, Science and History (a component of Humanities and Social Science);
  • Phase 2 comprises Geography, Languages and the Arts; and
  • Phase 3 comprises Health and Physical Education, Technologies, Economics and Business, and Civics and Citizenship.

Assessment

Assessment is the process of gathering information about students and their learning and making judgements on achievement using the data gathered. This information forms the basis of planning for future teaching and learning. Assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning.

Assessment Principles

  1. Assessments should be an integral part of Teaching and Learning
  2. Assessment should be educative
  3. Assessment should be fair
  4. Assessments should be designed to meet their specific purposes
  5. Assessment should lead to informative reporting
  6. Assessment should lead to school-wide evaluation processes

Assessment of the Australian Curriculum takes place in different levels and for different purposes, including:

  • ongoing formative assessment within classrooms for the purposes of monitoring learning and providing feedback, to teachers to inform their teaching, and for students to inform their learning
  • summative assessment for the purposes of twice-yearly reporting by schools to parents and carer’s on the progress and achievement of students
  • annual testing of Years 3 and 5 students’ levels of achievement in aspects of literacy and numeracy, conducted as part of the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)

The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) released the new Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline. The Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline is to replace the Curriculum Framework and Australian Curriculum.

The outline describes:

  • Mandated K-10 curriculum and achievement standards
  • Guiding principles for teaching, learning and assessment
  • Support for teachers in their assessment and reporting of student achievement
  • Assessment resources
  • Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines (Term 2014) which compliment the Early Years Learning Framework and the Western Australian Curriculum
  • PP – Year 10 English, Mathematics, HaSS, Physical Education, Health Education, Technologies, LOTE, The Arts and Science Western Australian Curriculum content including the general capabilities and cross curriculum priorities
  • PP- Year 10 English, Mathematics, HaSS, Physical Education , Health Education, The Arts , Languages, Technologies and Science West Australian Curriculum achievement standards
  • Student diversity materials
  • Draft Reporting Policy (PP) and Draft Reporting Policy (1-10)
  • Frequently asked questions

Reporting

Reporting is the process of communicating the outcomes of assessments to parents, carers and students. Reporting processes at Collier Primary School will be clear and transparent. Teachers will report informally about their students’ learning and development in a variety of ways tailored to the needs of the family. The following formal reporting processes will take place:

Term 1Parent – teacher interviews

Term 2End of semester report

Term 3Open night

Term 4End of semester report

Consistent with national reporting requirements, parents will be provided with comparative information that shows the number of students in each of the five achievement levels for each of the learning areas taught in each year.

Kindergarten Reports

Collier Primary School will continue to use the same Kindergarten report format as used prior to 2014. The school’s report format will be reviewed in line with the publication of the WA School Curriculum Authority’s (SCSA) Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines.

To ensure optimal learning and development of Kindergarten children at Collier Primary School, teachers will implement the SCSA Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines (Draft for Consultation).

The Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines focus on the Kindergarten year to assist educators in developing quality Kindergarten curriculum for WA children. It draws from key ideas and related content from the Early Years Learning Framework.

Pre-primary Reports

Since Semester 1 of 2016 Pre-primary teachers at Collier have been accessing the Department’s Reporting to Parents. ThePre-primary reports will include the following:

1.Learning Area Assessments -

English

Maths

Science

HaSS

Physical Education

Health Education

Visual Arts

Technologies

The 5 achievement descriptors will be used to report on these learning areas, but without letter grades (i.e. Excellent, High, Satisfactory, Limited, Very Low)

2. Attitude, Behaviour and Effort

The reports also need to include an assessment of the student’s attitude, behaviour and effort as listed below, using 5 descriptors (i.e. Consistently, Often, Sometimes, Seldom, Not Assessed)

Mathematics and includes information about their personal and social learning.

4.Attendance data

5.Interview request box

Primary Reports (1 – 6)

1.Years 1 – 6 reports should include learning area assessments as per the CollierPrimary School Reporting Schedule.

The 5 achievement descriptors will be used to report on these learning areas as letter grades (i.e.A, B, C, D and E).

Judging standardsis a tool to be used by teachers of Collier Primary School when reporting against the Achievement Standards; when giving assessment feedback; and when explaining the differences between one student’s achievement and another’s.

Judging standards comprises three, interrelated components:

  • Grades, and or achievement descriptions,for describing student achievement for the purpose of reporting.
  • Assessment pointersfor giving assessment feedback; and for setting the pitch of assessment tasks. Assessment pointers provide a point of reference when assigning a grade at the completion of a semester’s, or year’s, work.
  • Annotated work samplesfor indicating the meaning of each grade for each subject at each year level and for showing what students might need to do to improve.

Judging standards are found at:

2. Attitude, Behaviour and Effort

The reports also need to include an assessment of the student’s attitude, behaviour and effort as listed below, using 5 descriptors (i.e. Consistently, Often, Sometimes, Seldom, Not Assessed)

Works to the best of his/her ability

Shows self respect and care

Shows courtesy and respect for the rights of others

Participates responsibly in social and civic activities

Cooperates productively and builds positive relationships with others

Is enthusiastic about learning

Sets goals and works towards them with perseverance

Shows confidence in making positive choices and decisions

4.Teacher comment which references progress in English and

Mathematics

  1. The Second semester reports for years 1 -6 for the areas of Physical Education, Health Music, Visual Arts,HaSS,Science and Indonesian will need a short written summative comment indicating content area of studies in addition to the grade and effort allocations.

6.An overall teacher comment which references personal and social learning

7.Attendance data

8. Interview request box

Parent-Teacher Interviews

The school will close early one day during the final week of Term 1 in order to hold parent-teacher interviews. The purpose of these interviews is to provide parents with a ‘snapshot’ of their child’s academic progress (with a focus on literacy and numeracy) and their social, emotional and behavioural well-being.

Where the teacher has significant causes for concern, a longer interview should be booked prior to the parent-teacher interviews. In cases where the teacher feels a child may need to be referred to the school psychologist or an outside agency this must be discussed with the Learning Support Coordinator/Deputy Principal and shared with the parent during a meeting prior to the parent-teacher interviews. Parents should not be ‘surprised’ in the ten minute interview with worrying information about their child.

When providing feedback on a child’s progress or development to parents it is good practice to follow the ‘two stars and a wish’ model. The ‘wish’ must be delivered with some suggested strategies to support the child and parents.
