Summary:

In the United States (where), there is a growing problem with youth homelessness (what). Since 2008 (when), the number of homeless youth (who) has risen 72%. 1.2 million students in the United States are currently homeless. There are many causes behind the increase in numbers including economic conditions, drug abuse, and children seeking to escape violent situations (why). While major cities experience the majority of these cases, homelessness is not restricted to urban areas. 2/5 homeless kids are living in suburban or rural areas. Many of the children will hide their situation and continue to attend school or look for jobs to hold during the days. They consider their situation to be “embarrassing.” The worst part for many of them is at night, when finding sleeping accommodations can be very difficult. 75% of homeless students “couch surf” meaning that they stay with friends or other families for a night or two, then move on to someone else. In some areas, the homeless community will band together to form non-traditional families. The Obama administration is attempting to help the situation by pledging over $5 billion to try and end child homelessness by 2020.

Opinion/Reaction:

I find this problem to be shocking. America is one of the most developed countries in the world and to learn that over a million young people are living on the streets deeply concerns me. I cannot imagine what it would be like to come to school each day and try to learn, knowing that I do not have a place to go home when school is over. According to the article, the Obama administration is attempting to fix this problem by spending $5 billion. However, it seems that there are too many different causes to really fix the problem with money. Looking at the causes, it would seem that the problems are more about a lack of stable homes, which can’t be fixed with money alone.
