There was a girl who survived a 35,000 foot fall while skydiving. Her name is Makenzie Wethington, and she is 16-years old. On February 13, 2014, Makenzie was being interviewed at Baylor Institute.
The accident was caused by her parachute not opening. “I remember getting out off the plane having a feeling something would go wrong,” said Wethington. She added, “When I tried opening the parachute, it wouldn’t budge. I even tried kicking it like I learned in class.” She also stated,“ I just remember screaming and then I blacked, and I don’t remember anything after that until three days later.”
She suffered a broken backbone, fractured ribs, hip, and mild brain damage. Her doctor, Dr.SeemaSikka, said she’s doing better every day. Wethington says she thanks God every night for letting her be here for her recovery. Dr. Sikka says she can go back home in Texas in about a week.
“This is important to know because it doesn’t happen every day.”– Mustafa

Celebrating Amina!

Our student of the month is a special one. It is our beloved Amina Ali. Maybe some of you know about her because we raised money for Amina during Penny Wars in January. Before she had cancer, she was a charming student. Amina would work hard even though she’s only in kindergarten. Ms. Autumn told us she would ignore other students that would distract the class. Lastly, Amina would cooperate in activities and with her classmates. Now that she has cancer, she doesn’t have much energy. Luckily, Amina and her mom are in Chicago to get radiation and chemotherapy to help her get well. Amina is awesome! She is a brilliant student. We hope she gets better soon.

Caffeine is a powerful stimulant found in coffee, but most people don’t realize it’s a drug. Instead of drinking more coffeeto wake us up, we need to drink less to feel more awakened. A lot of people drink coffee, but coffee is actually bad for your health. Furthermore, caffeine in the coffee can be addictive. It makes the problem worse, because people are dependent on coffee. It’s also bad for the environment because coffee is sold in paper cups with plastic lids. Also, the more coffee people buy, the more money they waste. Kids copy their parents, and want to drink coffee too. Coffee wakes people up, but some people drink coffee instead of going to sleep. If that wasn’t enough, coffee even makes your teeth YELLOW. Coffee is an unhealthy drink that can be very expensive. I hope coffee doesn’t waste your money.

Mysterious Door DUN DUNDUN!!
By: Salma Ahmed (4th grade)
`I was riding back from Dugsi Academy. During the bus ride home, kids were fighting, but I managed to ignore them. I had had a really good day at school. I had written this report for my essay to win a prize that was $50, and a trip to the state capital as well. I hoped to win. After I got out of the bus, I walked to my house and knocked on my front door. No one came to answer, but luckily I had a spare key. I yelled, “Mom, Dad!” I looked around the house. No one was there. I went downstairs to the basement, and at the end of the room spotted these fake flowers. Behind the fake flowers was the mystery door. “What could possibly be in there?” I thought to myself. Full of excitement, I called my friends, Aisha and Nasteexa. They were also my neighbors. I told them about the mystery door I found behind the fake flowers. Later on that night they came over. We went down to the basement. As I shouted, “There it is!” my friends paused for a minute and looked at me. “Well, somebody needs to open the door.” I said. “Not it!” they both shouted. “Ok fine, I’ll do it,” I said. I slowly, opened the door, it was pitch dark, but I could see a little mud on the floor. I stepped on the mud, to make sure it wasn’t something else. It was solid! But when my friend stepped on it they fell in. “Nasteexa! Aisha!” I shouted…. “Where did my friends go?” …….
