Current Electricity Study Guide

Quiz – Wednesday October 24th 2008

Ms. Jones

1.  Define Current Electricity

2.  Define Current

- Flow of what moving charge?

3.  Insulators vs. Conductors

-  Which is used in current electricity?

4.  Voltage – potential difference (energy) from the beginning to the end of a circuit (1 path)

-  measured in volts

-  How does voltage affect current?

5.  Resistance – opposing force on a current

-  Why do circuits have resistors? (which are poor conductors)

-  How does resistance affect current?

-  4 factors that affect resistance

- Temperature, width, length, material

6.  Circuits

-  Parts of a circuit

i.  energy source, wires, load (resistor), switch (in most)

-  open/closed circuit

i.  Which will produce electricity?

ii.  How do you open and close a circuit?

7.  Series Circuit – one path ( I bulb does not work current stops)

-  uses

-  Voltage is divided among the amount of resistors

-  Current stays the same at all resistors (one path that they are all traveling on)

-  Be able to draw and/or analyze a circuit

CURRENT STAYS THE SAME, VOLTAGE DIVIDES AMONG RESISTORS

Ex. Voltage = 6 volts

Current = 12 amps

8.  Parallel Circuit – Circuit with more than one path ( one bulb does not work, current can still run through other paths.

-  uses

-  Voltage among resistors stays the same (separate path for each resistor)

-  Current is divided among the amount of resistors (paths) – more than one path to follow

-  Be able to draw and/or analyze a circuit

CURRENT DIVIDES AMONG PATHS, VOLTAGE STAYS THE SAME

Ex. Voltage 9 volts

Current 15 amps

-  Know the symbols of a circuit

9.  Fuses – why does a fuse melt?
