CURATORIAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME

Early Call for Expressions of Interest

UCA graduate Opportunity

CRATE will be offering up to six curatorial internships developed through support from University of the Creative Arts (UCA), Kent County Council (KCC), Art Council England (ACE) and the project partners listed below.

This opportunity is open to graduates from the University for the Creative Arts wanting to gain valuable paid experience working in the contemporary visual arts with regional organisations in Kent, to spend time and feeding back into UCA at Canterbury and to develop a curated outcome building on their experiences.

The Internship Programme will start in November 2012.

The Curatorial Internship is split into three project strands:

1. Experience - Each Curatorial Intern (CI) will spend a minimum of 20 paid days (@ £90/day) working with an arts organisation of their choice (from the list below) helping develop or deliver a specific project. This period of work can either be short-term based on 3-5 days a week, or longer term over the potential period of 6 months. This will depend on the commitments of the intern and also the duration and context of the host organisation's project.

Host organisations:

- Dover Arts Development, Dover - Turner Contemporary, Margate

- Whitstable Biennale, Whitstable- Trifarious Projects, Kent-wide

- Stour Vallery Arts, Ashford- Strange Cargo, Folkestone

- CRATE Studio and Project Space, Margate

2. Knowledge – The Internship Programme will also support current UCA students’ engagement with curation and off site working. Each CI will have the opportunity to train and work as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the School of Fine Art at UCA, Canterbury.

3. Production - Each CI will be expected to develop a project with support from the Curatorial Internship Coordinator (Toby Huddlestone, artist and past curator at CRATE). This could be a new artist commission by the CI or an invited artist, a curated exhibition or event, a publication or help with developing a larger future proposal, or a collaboration with the host organisation. This outcome will develop through discussions between the CI and the coordinator throughout the programme. There will be a production budget available to the CI for this outcome.

The programme will also encourage cross channel partnerships, specifically Bretagne, Calais, Le Havre and Rouen, and will be look at ways that project outcomes can operate inter regionally.

Example budget for each Curatorial Internship:

£1800 pay - 20 days @ £90/day

£400 travel

£1500 project production

£3700 total
