Cultural Heritage: Research, Resources, and Methods

The Palestinian American Research Center (PARC) and the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) announce a three-day workshop led by Dr. Irene Bierman-McKinney (Chair of Art History, UCLA)entitled “Cultural Heritage: Resources, Research, and Methods”, to be held from September 7–10, 2007 in Istanbul. The workshopwill include participants from Italy, Jordan, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Yemen, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Israel, Palestine, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Funded by the Getty Foundation, this workshop will inaugurate a new fellowship program for cultural heritage professionals – The Middle East and Mediterranean Basin Research Exchange Fellowship – that will begin in 2008 (details will be announced in Fall 2007).

Purpose:

To provide cultural heritage professionals from countries around the Mediterranean and in the Middle East a moderated forum for discussing the preservation, analysis, and presentation of their material cultures, and for sharing experiences and best practices with their colleagues.

Eligibility:

Palestinian nationals who are mid-level professionals engaged in any of a variety of projects aimed at preserving and presenting their cultural heritage, from archaeological site and object conservation to museum curating and displays, to digitization and database development. Participants may come from universities, antiquities services, as well as from other organizations.

Participant Benefits:

Participants will receive the cost of round trip airfare fromPalestineto Istanbul, lodging and meals during the seminar, stipend,site admissions, and institute materials.

Participant Requirements:

Each participant will give a 10-15 minute presentation on his/her work and must provide a text of the presentation to CAORC prior to the workshop. All workshop activities will be in English. Attendance and participation in all activities and common meals is required.

5. A short account of plans for dissemination of workshop information to colleagues in Palestine

6. A short account of what topics the applicant would like covered at the workshop

Palestinian participants will be chosen by a PARC review panel. Final approval and selection of all participants will be by an academic panel convened by CAORC in Washington, DC.
