  • School Improvement Plan (SIP) Updates by Principal and Departments
  • Guidance- Eric Belliard– Not present
  • Reading/Writing – Anita Parsotan - More teachers were hired in reading to help students in 11th grade prepare for FSA and focus on the SAT to help students build their reading capacity. Students will begin FSA retakes. Teachers are using USA test prep and Vocabulary.com to help students improve their reading. We are using NEWSELA through Science and SS to help build students capacity, endurance, and build background knowledge. Students can access this through SSO.
  • Math – Denise Miranda - Math scores improved dramatically. We will continue using math nation, using common planning to allow teachers to plan together, continuing Mu Alpha Theta tutoring after school. There is no Algebra II EOC, the teachers and students will be concentrating on SAT/ ACT prep.
  • Science – Vamini Ramkissoon– The Biology EOC scores went down slightly from 48% to 41%. Causes were found and discussed with the Biology teachers. The teachers will be using the county software for pretests. Pretest scores will be uploaded on Canvas to aggregate data to determine student’s strengths and areas of improvement. NEWSELA will be used as well to give students background knowledge on Biology concepts. Test taking endurance seems to be a problem with the students. They will be given sample test questions on their midterm exam.
  • Principal Updates – Vivian Suarez
  • Ms. Suarez introduced the Administrative Staff for the 2017 school year
  • School Grade – Our school grade remained a C but we increased by 46 points. This is the 3rd largest gain in the district. We are only 36 points away from a B.

  • Latinos in Action. – This is a college/career ready leadership course. Our students will work with Hunt Elementary to help their students with literacy, reading and eventually math. Our students will go to Hunt Elementary once or twice a week. The class focuses on a 30/40/40 model. Thirty percent of the students are top students, 40% students on the border of graduation 2.0 GPA, and 40%____. Students will be involved in committees that will be responsible for projects within the school and community. These projects will start in October/ November. We have just created the committees. Mr. Calero is just the facilitator, the kids drive the program. Students of all grade levels, all backgrounds are in the class.
  • PASL – Personalization through Academic and Social Learning – This program is for 9th grade students. It focuses on building relationships with students in their studyhall classes. Currently Mr. Blackman, Mrs. Haywood, and Ms. Lee are piloting the program at out school. We hope to expand PASL next year.
  • Mentoring Tomorrows Leaders (MTL)– Ms. Nealey is the coordinator. Upper level students work with lower level students. It was supposed to begin last week, but Hurricane Irma made us postpone MTL.
  • Growth Mindset – Mrs. Brown - Based on the book Mind set my Carol Dweck. As a school, we are working on the growth vs. fixed mindset. In a fixed mindset, people (students) think intelligence, athletic ability, etc is set. You cannot improve no matter how hard you try. We are working on the power of yet. Growth mindset is when you know that you can grow from your failures and failures are OK.
  • We are piloting a new coding program. An outside vendor is coming to teach a select group of students how to code. It is a $7,000 class student are receiving for free.
  • Beautification projects around the school will be upcoming in the next few weeks. Hurricane Irma has caused a short delay.
  • New Business – no new business at this meeting
