Cross Country Edition
Week 1, August 28th - September 3rd
Welcome to the New Year and Thank You!!!
With one meet under our belts, it is time to continue to work hard and start building on the first meet that we just completed. Thank you to all the student-athletes and parents that attended the parent meeting on Thursday. I understand that some of you could not make it, but please feel free to contact me at any time to ask any questions that you may have. I know I covered a lot of information, but it is all important and something that we need to hear each year. Our program has steadily grown over the last 5 years and I anticipate that it will continue to grow at a steady rate, which is awesome!
On occasion, we will take two buses to the meets like we did to Cy Ridge which will allow us to race almost the entire team. However, we will be limited to one bus over the next several meets due to a lack of drivers for our second bus and/or entry restrictions in the meet that we are attending. We will be traveling about 50 athletes to the Sam Houston 1 meet on September 3 and about the same to Seven Lakes on September 9th. The meet this weekend will be at TC Jester Park which is just north of 610 on TC Jester RD.
Several things will be listed below that are important for you to read that will include deadlines for the materials discussed. In addition, you will find weekly rosters, a time schedule for this week, directions for this week, pictures, results, and many other topics.
A special congratulation goes out to Madison Gilcrease and Blake Tepera for winning their inaugural High School races. Awesome Job and keep up the great job. There were many awesome performances this week and I look forward to every runner’s steady progress towards our goals. In addition, Congratulations to Madison for posting the fastest 2 mile race in the State thus far into the season!

For those that are unaware of the team website, please feel free to visit for valuable team information. Within this site, you will find important dates, rosters, schedules, records, directions, and much, much more. Please take advantage of it.
A Few Notes….
Please remember that if you are interested in transporting the tents and mats for the team to and from the meets, please let me know. We will need all the help we can get week in and week out. There are 3 tents and about 6 mats. If you look ahead to the schedule on the website and know that you would like to do this for one of the meets, please e-mail me ( )
Please remember that we will have a pre-district pasta meal on the Wednesday night prior to district. This has been a great tradition that we want to continue for the benefit of our athletes. In addition, we will have a post-district meal in the park after the district meet. If you are interested in heading this up or volunteering, please let me know. The district meet will be on a Friday starting at 9:00 AM with the team celebration to follow until about 2:00 PM (approximate)
*** Parents and family are encouraged to attend the post-race team celebration after the district meet. I encourage all athletes that have your parents at the celebration to ride home with your parents. We will have two buses to transport the athletes TO THE MEET, but will NOT HAVE a bus to bring students home. So if your parents are there, I encourage you to ride home with them or to arrange a ride with a teammate. This will ensure that we will have EVERY athlete at the District meet to race and support each other.
*** Please remember to have your waiver ready if you are going to leave any meet with your parent. You are only allowed to leave the meet with your parents, you are not allowed to leave with any other parents/athletes.
*** More information to come. If you need any information added to the weekly newsletters, please e-mail me so I can get it out.
*** Please join the Booster Club as it has many benefits for you and our program, info can be found at:

**********Pre – District Team Pasta Dinner**********
Every year, on the Wednesday before the district meet, we have a pre-district pasta meal that prepares the team (Carbo-loading) for the big day on that Friday. This year the plans are in the works to host it in the same place as last year, St. John’s Lutheran Church (at the corner of Spring Cypress and Huffmeister). This facility had a large kitchen and a large dining area. If anyone is interested in helping out or has other suggestions on locations, please contact me. More info will be sent out later about the date and time of the event. All team members need to try to plan on being there to share in this team building experience and to get ready for the District meet. It is a fun filled afternoon.
**********Post – District Team Cook Out**********
Immediately following the awards ceremony at the District meet, we will have our annual team cook out. If you are interested in helping in this event or would like to donate anything, please contact me and I will get you in contact with those heading up the event.
Calling all Parents:
We are looking for parents that will be around for a while to get with and “train” under our Senior parents to learn the ways of the Woods. We have several team traditions and activities that take place every season. These senior parents are willing to help you learn and to give pointers as to what works best and to help transition those interested in taking over once their runner graduates from the program. Please let me know if you are interested.
If anyone ever has any info that you would like included in the weekly newsletter, please let me know and I will be glad to add the information. Take care,
Coach Zarate
