This is a beautiful necklace comprised of 2 handcrafted pieces, the neck piece and the toggle lock. A joint project by Naz Garces and XQDesigns, the neck piece is created using simple chain crochet stitches with a flower toggle lockwrapped with crocheted thread that can be a pendant as well.

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to crochet, wrap crochet and simple wire work techniques. But what’s interesting in creating this piece is the crochet wrapping techniqueyou will learn in making the neck piece. Step by Step Instructions

Step 1: The Body of the Necklace

Pre crochet 4 yards of thread and leave the 3 inches tails on both ends then pre-cut another 3 yards of plain threads.

Step 2:

Take the 3 inches tail end of the crocheted thread and both ends of 3 yards plain threads. Join and level the 3 threads then knot once just above the crocheted part.

Step 3:

The tail’s end now counts 3 threads with 2 inches in length after the knot.

Step 4:

Fold your plain threads into 3, keeping your crocheted thread away.

Step 5:

Join the 3 threads together. Now, you have two groups of loops, the left side group and the right side group.

Step 6:

Grab the right side group of loops and insert your fingers through it. There should be 3 strands wrapped around your finger.

Step 7:

Do the same for the left side group.

While you are holding both sides, stretch the thread gently to condition them. This stretching will somehow condition the thread and minimizes creases on the thread then set this aside.

Step 8: Preparing the connecting wire

Cut 2 pieces 4 inches stainless wire using your wire cutter. Bend the wire at 2 inches and create the loop from there using your round nose pliers and flat nose pliers.

Step 9:

Bend the wire at 2 inches and create a loop using your round nose pliers.

Step 10:

Open the wire loop and insert your right group of loops.

Step 11:

Then secure the wire loop by closing the gap and wrapping the excess wire, no more than 2 times using your nose/bent pliers. Cut off excess wire with your wire cutter.

Step 12:

Take the left side group of loops and repeat Steps 10 & 11.

Step 13:

On the left group of loops, dab a glue on the knot then cut off excess thread with scissors.

Step 14:

Now we’ll start to wrap the crochet thread onto the plain thread. Hold the group of plain thread with your left hand and keep it still. Your right hand should be holding the crocheted thread and should go around the plain thread wrapping them.

Step 15:

As soon as you have wrapped at least 3 inches. You may adjust the position of your hands as shown in the photo.

Hold the already wrapped area with your left hand while the right hand holds the crocheted thread. Your left hand should do the wrapping while keeping your right hand still, but holding the crocheted thread lightly, releasing the crocheted thread slowly. Continuously wrap until you reach the other end of the necklace.

Step 16:

As you reach the other end of the necklace, insert the 3 inches tail into the wire loop like shown in this picture.

Step 17:

Tie a knot 2 times then dab a glue on the knot. Cut off excess thread with scissors.

Step 18:

Insert your cones on both ends of the necklace.

Step 19:

Create a loop using your round nose pliers.

Step 20:

Then wrap excess wire at the base, no more than 2 times and snip off excess wire with wire cutter.

Step 21: Creating the Flower Toggle Lock

Cut 16 inches of 14ga stainless wire. Find the middle of the wire and create your 1st loop using your mandrel (size 10 mm). Right after the 1st loop is made, leave a gap of about ½ inch and create 1 more loop on each side. Leave ½ inch gap again and create 1 more loop on each side to make 5 loops. These loops/circles will become your petals.

Step 22:

After creating 5 loops, adjust and bend the wire to form a flower.

Step 23:

Draw both end wires to the inner middle of the flower and coil them.

Step 24:

Grab your beeswax thread and without pre cutting them from the spool, leave 2 inches tail and crochet one chain as a starter. The next chain stitches will be done with the wire by following this pattern:

Take your thread by the crochet hook under the wire, then over the wire, then under the wire once again, and so on, and so forth until you cover the 1st petal with crocheted thread.

In this tutorial we’ve made 18 -20 crochet stitches for each petal and 2-3 crochet stitches for the gaps in between two petals.

Step 25:

As you reach the final petal and done crocheting it, cut the thread off the spool, leaving a tail of about 2 inches in length then tie a knot using your beginning tail and end tail. Dab a glue over the knot before you cut off the excess thread with your scissors.

Step 26:

Get one jump ring and connect the flower toggle lock to one end of your necklace. Do the same for the end with your “T” toggle lock and set aside.

You have completed the Crocheted Necklace with Flower Toggle Lock Pendant. Hope you like it!
