MODULE: CROATIAN AS A SECOND AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE

University study program

This is an independent module intended for foreign students which leads to a diploma addendum (additional certificate) will be issued.

Academic/vocational degree is earned as a part of undergraduate and graduate studies. Upon completion of a two-semester module students will receive an additional certificate – a diploma addendum.

The reasons for starting the module were motivated by the newly-emerged needs (increasing international cooperation and a booming number of foreign students at the University of Zagreb who are eager to learn Croatian language and study Croatian culture) as well as by the tradition at Croaticum – Center for learning Croatian Language as a Second and Foreign Language.

The users :

Croatian as a Second and Foreign Language is aimed at foreign students attending undergraduate and graduate courses which offer exchange/mobility programs at the University of Zagreb (for them the module is free),

as well as at lifelong education students (for them the module is not free).

Purpouse:

During the process of learning Croatian and getting to know Croatian society and culture, students of Croaticum module will acquire important competences in their respective fields, such as translating to and from Croatian, teaching Croatian abroad, teaching foreign languages to native Croatian students in language centers, working in tourist agencies, foreign companies' branch offices, diplomacy, institutions of the EU etc.

Enrolment requirements and admission procedure:

The enrollment conditions are a high-school diploma and the entrance exam which tests the level of proficiency in Croatian language. Those students who are not proficient in Croatian language cannon take the entrance exam.

Duration of the study programme and ECTS credits:

Module: Croatian as a Second and Foreign Language is taught throughout one academic year (2 semesters). Upon completion of the Module, students receive an additional certificate.

Minimal number of ECTS credits necessary to complete the module is 60 ECTS credits. Students who complete only a part of the Module (e.g. students who complete only one semester, or students who complete only language exercises without completing the optional courses), receive a certificate which lists the courses completed by the student, the earned grades and the corresponding number of ECTS credits.

Language Exercises in Croatian as a Second Language 1 (level A2+ according to CEFR)

a) themes and vocabulary: introductions, getting to know each other

b) grammatical units: sounds of Croatian (alphabet, Croatian phonetic inventory), present of the verb biti; personal pronouns, nominative case of nouns, gender and number of nouns, numbers 0-100; professions (introduction)

c) cultural topics: basic information about Croatia, basic information about Croaticum

2. week

a) themes and vocabulary: professions, family, animals

b) grammatical units: numbers up to a billion, present of the verb zvati se; possesive pronouns, plural of masculine nouns (long plural forms, sibilarization, fleeting a

3. week

a) themes and vocabulary: qualities of things, people and animals; colors; students and their countries of origin

b) grammatical units: nominative case – possessive adjectives, descriptive adjectives (sound changes), present tense of the verbs that end in -ati> -am
