Certified Medical Assistant
Job Description
Reports To:Medical Director
Classification:Non-exempt (hourly)
Supervises:0 FTEs
Role:Assists in the delivery of primary health care services and client care management in a fast-paced office setting. Under the supervision of the medical provider, participates in providing health promotion, health maintenance and illness management.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepares patients for provider office visit, greets and escorts patient to the exam room
- Obtains patient’s vitals, updates the patient’s medical history, medications and allergies
- Documents all information in chart in an accurate, thorough and timely manner
- Explains procedures that may or will be performed
- Prepares and administers injections in an accurate manner
- Collects and prepares specimens
- Performs office lab procedures accurately and timely
- Prepares lab specimens for contract labs and distributes them in a timely manner
- Prepares patient for the exam, treatment or procedure
- Prepares exam and treatment rooms for new patients
- Cleans and sterilizes all equipment
- Distributes educational materials to the patient as directed by the provider
- Assists the patient with referrals and scheduling for follow-up appointments

- Communicates test results to patient as directed by the provider
- Maintains a safe, clean, efficient and welcoming environment for patients and staff
- Performs routine clerical, reception and medical records tasks as needed
- Completes other duties as assigned
Expectations:
- Maintain a friendly, respectful and welcoming attitude toward all patients and staff

- Maintain awareness of and respect for cultural differences of patients and staff
- Respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations and when patients are upset
- Understand and follow all Crescent CHC, OSHA, HRSA and other guidelines required
- Attend all mandatory meetings, in-services and training
- Maintain a safe environment free of hazards and risks for patients and staff
Experience: At least two years’ prior experience in a medical office setting preferred
Education: Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program required or current Iowa license as an LPN or RN
Environmental/Working Conditions: Office hours are generally 8 AM to 5 PM Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Later hours are scheduled until 7 PM on Wednesdays. Additional late hours may be added as Crescent is expanded. There may be frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic medical setting.
Physical/mental Requirements: Varied activities including standing, walking, bending, reaching, lifting. The position requires full range of motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and hand/eye coordination. It also requires standing and walking for extended periods of time. The position sometimes requires lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds. The position requires keeping a fast pace, sometimes working under stressful conditions and some irregular hours each week.
Interpersonal skills: The Medical Assistant must be friendly, compassionate, nonjudgmental, able to keep information confidential at all times. The medical Assistant must be able to communicate effectively with patients in order to gain their trust and cooperation. The individual must be a cooperative team member. Bilingual skills are (English/Spanish) highly desirable.
Other skills: The Medical Assistant will be required to use fax machines, copiers, printer, and computer. Knowledge of electronic medical records is helpful. The MA will need to use personal protection equipment for safety purposes. The MA will need to be familiar with and use diagnostic and medical equipment properly.

Beginning hourly rate: $13.00 per hour
