Choose one of the two writing assignments listed below to write on _____, the day of our unit test on “Anthem.”

Bring your own copy of “Anthem” and a brief outline. We will brainstorm and plan in class. Responses must be one to two pages; 3 – 4 paragraphs.

1. “Anthem” illustrates the importance of thinking and judging independently and of acting according to our rational principles – even when our “brothers” oppose us.

In light of the fact that smoking, drugs, shoplifting, and gang violence often involve peer pressure, write a letter to a teen magazine (print or non-print) explaining “Anthem’s” benefits for teen age readers.

2. Write a brief letter to Ayn Rand about “Anthem.” You can state your reaction to the text (What did you find particularly surprising? Exciting? Moving? Provocative? Relevant?), ask about aspects of the novel that puzzled you, relate the novel to personal experiences? Etc.
