Creating Stable Links to Electronic Articles:

Following are examples of how to create stable links to articles licensed by the MSU Libraries. Stable links are not available for every resource. In order for the link to work for off-campus users attach the following URL in front of the stable link if it is not already present:

Proquest

Click on the Copy Link icon to retrieve the stable link when you are in the document view of an article. Copy the URL that will display in the popup window. In order for the link to work for off-campus users attach the following URL in front of the stable URL link:

JSTOR

View the “Article Information” to retrieve the stable link. The link is even labeled "Stable URL". In order for the link to work for off-campus users attach the following URL in front of the stable URL link:

First Search:

Open the article link, then click on the "Link Pickup" link at the top corner of the First Search page.

After clicking on the "Link Pickup" link the screen below displays. Use the link below the "IP-address recognition URL…" as your stable link. In order for the link to work for off-campus users attach the following URL in front of the stable URL link:

Science Direct (Elsevier), Wiley, Blackwell/Synergy, SpringerLink, Cambridge:

These databases use a DOI (Digital Object Identifier). Retrieve your article and locate the DOI. Normally the DOI is located on the full text or summary page but not visible on the pdf. To create the link begin with and then add everything after the doi in your article. Example:

Ovid:

A Jumpstart URL is used to create the link. Click open the "Email Jumpstart" link at the abstract page view.

Copy the Jumpstart URL and use that to begin the stable link. In order for the link to work for off-campus users attach the following URL in front of the stable URL link:

InfoTrac:

When you find your citation in Infotrac, click on the title of the article and not the full text or pdf link. In this example, I will select entry #39 below.

After selecting your title, this view will display. To get the stable link, click on the InfoMark icon on the left hand side of the screen (located above the Basic Search link).

After clicking on the InfoMark icon, a popup window below will display. Copy the InfoMark URL and use that as your stable link. The URL may run on to several lines so be sure you copy all of it! BioOne:

The stable link can be copied from the URL in the address from the full text view of the article. Do not use the URL from the pdf view.

Use the URL posted in the address bar when viewing the pdf copy of the article. In the example below, the link used is:

EBSCO:

Click on the title of the article and not the full text or pdf link.

The view below will then display. Page down until you find the line item called

"Persistent link to this record". Use this as your stable link. This link already includes the EZproxy string so you do not need to add this.

Emerald Journals:

Click on the title link of the article not the html or pdf view. The screen below should then appear. Look for the field labeled, Article URL, as this is the stable link.
