Data Set Description: Since 1994, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has required uniform, easy-to-read nutrition labeling for nearly all foods. The

purpose of the new label is to reduce confusion and help consumers choose more

healthful diets. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Service (HHS) have teamed up to produce the Food Guide Pyramid, which recommends eating a variety of foods, an appropriate number of calories, and a modest amount of fat-specifically, 30% or fewer of your total number of calories per day should be calories from fat, and only a third of those should be

calories from saturated fat. For adults consuming 2000 calories per day, which

works out to no more than 65 grams of fat, no more than 20 grams of which are

saturated fat.

Directions: Please answer the following questionsFIRST using excel and then using SAS. Whenever you find a mean you must also find the standard deviation.

  1. (10pts) Based on a 2000 calorie diet, on average how many candies can 1 person eat from each brand in 1 day without exceeding the caloric, total fat, and saturated fat guidelines listed in the data set description? (Hint: On average how many candy bars from each brand can you eat in a day?)
  1. (10pts) For each brand, which type (bar or non-bar) has less calories, total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrates, and sugar? Based on your findings would you eat bar or non-bar candies and why?
  1. (10pts) Find the mean calories, total fat, and saturated fat for the candies Kristen likes and dislikes. Additionally, find the above means based on brand and type for only Hershey’s and M&M/Mars. (Hint: this results in 8 categories)
  1. (10pts) Find the mean calories, total fat, and saturated fat for bars and non-bars. Using excel, make a bar graph of calories, total fat, and saturated fat in bars vs non-bars. (Hint: show means and standard deviations!)
  1. (5pts) Using the whole data set, make a bivariate plot of total fat and saturated fat using excel.
