Grammar Quiz: The Passive

Complete the sentences with the correct passive form of the verbs in parenthesis.

  1. Jamaica WAS DISCOVERED (discover) by Europeans in the 16th century.
  1. Today, Creole, a mixture of languages, IS SPOKEN BY (speak) by many Jamaicans.
  1. Some of the best coffee in the world IS GROWN(grow) on the island.

If possible, change the active sentence to passive. Include the by-phrase only if necessary. If there is no passive form, write no passive.

NO PASSIVE

Choose either the active or passive voice, as well as the appropriate verb tense.

Carl Gauss 9 (recognize) WAS RECOGNIZED as a mathematical genius when he was ten. One day a professor gave him an arithmetic problem. Carl 10 (ask) WAS ASKED to add up all the numbers from 1 to 100 (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5, etc.) It 11 (take) TOOK him only eight seconds

to solve the problem. How could he do it so quickly? Can you do it quickly? Carl could do it quickly because he 12 (know) KNEW that each pair of numbers – 1 plus 100, 2 plus 99, 3 plus 98, and so on to 50 plus 51 – equaled 101. So he 13 (multiply) MULTIPLIED 50 times 101 and 14 (come) CAME up with the answer: 5,050.

Passive Modals. Complete the sentences. Choose the verb that makes the sentence true. Use the correct form for each passive modal.

Write a short paragraph about a holiday. In your topic sentence, say which holiday you are describing and when it is celebrated. In your supporting sentences, describe what happens on the holiday. Use a mix of active and passive sentences to make your writing more interesting.
