Old Business
Review “Homework” – Lynn asked if the members present went through at least the first couple of steps of the Matriculation process. Most in attendance filled out the application online and got a student ID number. A couple of members thought the process was rather convoluted.
Goals for 2010-2011 – Lynn sent members the Committee Structure Reviewdocument before the meeting, for their information. Mike Marion asked, for the benefit of new staff present, what the goals were from last year’s committee. Lynn distributed the College SLO document in response to Mike’s question and Genevieve mentioned that previous discussions revolved around assessments and priority registration—issues that have been addressed.
Priority Registration for Athletes – Chris Thomas suggested compiling data on the effect on student athletes who aren’t given priority registration. Lynn said that effort is in process.
Chris suggested that CalWORKSstudents are another group who should be looked at with regards to priority registration. Chris said that, although many of these students also fall into the EOPS group, which does get served by priority registration, there is still a large number who don’t and could benefit from getting it.
Top two (2) goals for this year include reviewing the orientation process and retention. Questions to ask about the orientation process consist of what does it do and what should it do? Lynn sees retention and orientation as inextricably linked. Tiffany would like to see CRC present both in-person and online orientations. Mike suggested moving this goal to the top.
Mike asked, with regards to retention, what processes are in place to help students get all the way through? Chris posed the question—how do we purposefully engage the students? Are there other parts of the matriculation process that offer assistance?
Report from District Matriculation – The ATB waiting period (30 days) question was being batted about by the District Matriculation committee. Lynn reported that, if something is of interest to at least two of the colleges, the District Matriculation Committee will pursue it. There is a request from District to see if our committee and the Assessment folks would be interested in tackling the ATB issue. Chris will give it some thought and get back to Lynn. Tiffany Clark suggested Lynn talk to Alice Kwong to see what implications there might be with Financial Aid. Lynn will ask Alice to attend the next committee meeting.
According to Chris, there will be a new vendor for the ATB tests which used to be paper and pencil tests. Compass, which is a user-friendly software program, will be used in the future and throughout the district and we want to align ourselves with them for the sake of portability. The plan is to buy the software in March and test it in March/April so that it will be ready for CRC to use for Math and English by the Fall 2011 semester. FLC is doing a pilot right now with ESL Assessment testing. The software takes away the choice from students on which level to test at. Lynn mentioned that this software might be used as a web component for testing at high schools. Tiffany thought this might not be a viable option due to the fact that it would take several days to test all the students instead of the one day here. Chris mentioned that there are ways around that but not in the near future.
New Business
Meeting Time Change –Lynn will check with the Senate on extending the Matriculation meetings by 30 minutes. She said that the majority of members approved the extra time.
