“BE GRATEFUL… SET GOALS”
With a background in cultural anthropology and ESL-teaching, Laura Resau has lived and traveled in Latin America and Europe - experiences that inspired her books for young people. Her latest novel, The Queen of Water (cowritten with María Virginia Farinango) was praised as "riveting tale... by turns heartbreaking, infuriating and ultimately inspiring " in a starred review by Kirkus. Her previous novels - Star in the Forest, The Ruby Notebook, The Indigo Notebook, Red Glass, and What the Moon Saw - have garnered many starred reviews and awards, including the IRA YA Fiction Award, the Américas Award, and a spot on Oprah's Kids' Book List. Acclaimed for its sensitive treatment of immigration issues, Resau's writing has been called "vibrant, large-hearted" (Publishers' Weekly) and "powerful, magical" (Booklist). Resau lives with her husband and young son in Colorado. She donates a portion of her royalties to indigenous rights organizations in Latin America.
Interview with Laura Resau:
What is your personal definition of success?
Identifying your current (ever-evolving) dreams and goals, feeling that you're realizing them, and feeling grateful about it.
What certain aspects of success do you think are overlooked by the general public?
I think that the public often focuses on external success (money, fame, awards, etc). I think it's essential to have a feeling of internal happiness, satisfaction, and excitement about life-- for me that's tied into success. I also think it's so important to feel gratitude for your success. Without a feeling of gratitude, you won't be able to value and enjoy your success.
What does The Queen of Water have to do with success?
Maria Virginia is constantly facing obstacles to living a happy life as a young girl. She identifies her dreams and goals (the small ones, which evolve throughout the book, as well as the more over-arching goals). With spunk and determination, she devises creative ways to realize her goals and dreams. She doesn't let her racist and classist society limit her success. She lives by the idea “querer es poder”-- wanting something badly enough gives you the power to do it.
What do you think success is based on in our society?
I think everyone has his or her own idea of success to some extent. Depending on the subculture a person belongs to in our society, you might see different measures of success. In some subcultures, having an expensive vehicle gives people a feeling of success. In others, a cool car might not so matter as much as having enough money and freedom to travel a lot.
How did you become successful as an author?
I realized that I love writing stories-- that it's essential for me to write in order to enjoy life. In my early twenties, I identified being a novelist as my dream, and I created steps for myself to reach that goal.
What do you think the qualities of a successful person are?
Determination, focus, gratitude, not being too swayed by other people's opinions, feeling an internal drive to realize your dreams.

Who is one of your role models that has inspired you to be successful and why have they inspired you?
I read a number of inspiring books that have helped me stay on the path to realizing my dreams. One is called THE ARTIST'S WAY, by Julia Cameron. It helped me keep up my confidence as a creative person, and stay focused on my goals.
Why do you think that some people don't consider themselves successful? Is it a self-esteem issue?
I think part of it might be self-esteem. I also think that without gratitude, you might not feel successful, because there's always someone more famous or richer or more fascinating or whatever.
Do you consider yourself successful? Why or why not?
I consider myself successful in that I've been able to realize many of my dreams (writing books, traveling and living internationally, helping people, having a great husband and child, having meaningful friendships, etc.) I feel very grateful. That said, my life is far from perfect--- I have new challenges and new dreams that are always evolving.
In your judgment, what might be some useful research studies that should be undertaken with regard to the topic of success?
Maybe looking at the role gratitude plays in success. Maybe looking at identifying dreams and goal-setting as part of success.

Ingrid Carney, founder and CEO of Ingrid and Isabel (maternity clothing line)

“VISUALIZE IT AND THEN MAKE IT HAPPEN”
I founded Ingrid & Isabel because I had a product idea I wanted to share with other women.
In 2001, a universal "I-can't-button-my-pants" moment sparked the idea for the Bellaband.
In 2003, I shipped our first order to a customer in Northern California.
By 2005, the Bellaband was available in maternity boutiques across the country.
It was a dream realized when I heard from happy moms that the Bellaband was the hardest working maternity accessory they owned. At the same time however, I heard from pregnant women who desperately wanted a Bellaband but didn't have a boutique close by, or found the price hard to bear.
So, I made my dream a little bigger...Let's make a more affordable version of the Bellaband available to more women. As luck would have it, Target Stores called and shared my dream.
In 2007, we set out to offer a maternity band by Ingrid & Isabel to Target Guests across the country. We challenged our seamless engineers to produce a maternity band with similar function but at a better price. Different yarns, densities, compression and measurements later, it worked. We call it the BeBand.
By 2009, we created BeMaternity, a collection of affordable, functional, seamless solutions for pregnancy.
With 1800 stores across the country, Target provided the solution. Now, more women can enjoy the function and comfort Ingrid & Isabel brings to maternity wardrobes everywhere.

Bigger dream realized.

Tori Allen (X Games Gold medalist)

“TAKE RISKS… MAKE MEMORIES… LOVE THE LIFE YOU MAKE FOR YOURSELF”
I am 23 (24 on July 30th) and I live in Steamboat Springs, CO. I was born in Auburn, AL then moved to California for 1 year, Albertville, France for 1 year, and then Benin, West Africa for 4 ½ years. I moved back to America when I was 9 almost 10 years old. I was homeschooled by Shawn Allen (she teaches at your school) from Kindergarten to 8th grade. I started rock climbing when I was 10 years old, became a professional rock climber at age 12 and competed in and won the X-games Gold when I was 14 years old. I then retired, and took up Pole Vaulting. I went on to Pole Vault on scholarship for Florida State University for 4 years.
I graduated college at age 21 with a degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising, and then had a life changing moment. I loaded up my little car with all of my favorite things. I gave the rest away to Salvation Army (a donation company), and I drove (by-my-self) 42 hours, 2,254 miles, toSteamboat Springs, CO. I had a lot of time to think about my life on this drive and do some self reflecting. I realized that life is not about winning gold, or being the best, or what magazine I am on the cover of, or any of it! But, it is about relationships. It is about family, friends, and memories. I made a decision on that drive that I would put my competitiveness, my attitude, and my guard, all away. I decided I would open up and take a risk emotionally. I had my guard so far up the past 7 years I didn't give anyone a chance to get to know me therefore I pretty much have no past. With out good memories, what is life. I opened up to the idea of accepting what life handed to me and finding the good in all. I have begun to make life long friends, my relationships have become real, I have made more memories in the past 2 ½ years since making that decision then all the years before it. I am the happiest I have ever been, and I can truly say, for the first time ever, that I love the person I am becoming! I LOVE LIFE!
A few funny things about me: I still sleep with a teddy bear, I am building a chicken coop right now for my 5 pet chicks all named after Disney princesses, I am not afraid to "pull-off" any outfit! i.e. I wear crazy outfits and bright colors! When I grow up I want to get married and have twin girls :) . AND...... I am honest and speak my mind! I am not afraid to be a little silly :) Just ask anyone who has spent 5 min with me. lol.

Jennifer Haugh, owner and principal of Haugh Communications

“KNOW WHEN IT’S TIME TO START OVER”

Jennifer Haugh has worked in a multitude of capacities for a number of interesting employers, such as a Congressman, a D.C. chef, a public radio giant, a youth orchestra, a sustainable catering company and a high school Academic Decathlon preparatory materials supplier. In her spare time, she chaired a city arts commission in Minneapolis (Minnesota), performed with orchestras on the French horn and served as president of one of the top five nonprofit publishers in the United States.
In 2009, Jen was laid off during the economic downturn. After what had to be the millionth job rejection in a year, she got fed up with the standard employment approach and came to the conclusion that it was time to start over—and go to Harvard. She then sold most of her belongings—including a house and car—and moved across the country to Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 2011, she graduated from the Harvard Kennedy School with a Master in Public Administration and subsequently started her own writing and editing business. Jen has recently been accepted to the Harvard Graduate School of Design to conduct research on the use of public art and community engagement to improve public opinion on wind energy.
