Call to Worship

Our help is in the name of Lord, who made heaven and earth. O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He is our God; and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand.

*Song of Adoration and Thanksgiving

Rejoice, the Lord Is King Trinity Hymnal№309

*Prayer of Invocation and Thanksgiving

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power,

and the glory, forever. Amen.

Old Testament Reading Proverbs 22:11-21

He who loves purity of heart,and whose speech is gracious, will have the king as his friend. The eyes of the Lord keep watch over knowledge,but he overthrows the words of the traitor. The sluggard says, "There is a lion outside! I shall be killed in the streets!" The mouth of forbidden women is a deep pit;

he with whom the Lord is angry will fall into it. Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him. Whoever oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth,

or gives to the rich, will only come to poverty. Incline your ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply your heart to my knowledge, for it will be pleasant if you keep them within you,

if all of them are ready on your lips. That your trust may be in the Lord,I have made them known to you today, even to you.

Have I not written for you thirty sayings of counsel and knowledge, to make you know what is right and true, that you may give a true answer to those who sent you?

Song of Confession and Supplication

Praise Him! Praise Him! Trinity Hymnal № 173

Praise SongAwesome God

Our God is an awesome God he reigns.
From heaven above with wisdom, power and love.
Our God is an awesome God he reigns.
From heaven above with wisdom, power and love.

Unison Confession

Almighty and most merciful Father; we have erred, and strayed from Yourways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against Your holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and there is no health in us. But You, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare those, O God, who confess their faults. Restore those of us who are penitent; according to Your promises declared unto humankind In Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for His sake; that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of Your holy Name. Amen.

Sermon Notes

Introduction: A key thought: When you hear the word “exorcism” what intrudes on your imagination? You probably think of Hollywood movies or television shows where people convulse and are scary looking. The people of Jesus’ day saw something totally different and more personal and frightening. In His redemptive work Jesus came to destroy the Devil and his works (1 John 3:8).

1. Teaching is Primary with Jesus – vs. 1:14; 21 (Matthew 4:17; Luke 4:15)

a.

b.

2. Overcoming Devil’s Power Shows Authority – vs. 22-27; 34

3. Fame Came to Jesus from His Authority – vs. 28-34

Conclusion:

a. The message of the Gospel must come from teaching and preaching.

b. Jesus’ power over dark forces continues today.

Welcome

Welcome to Covenant Presbyterian Church. We are a church that is resolved, as the Apostle Paul said, to know nothing but Jesus Christ and Him crucified. This means we are a community seeking to discover just how amazing the love of God is, as we see it in the Gospel.

We are glad you are here, and we hope that you will find that there is a place for you at CPC as we worship Christ together.

Please introduce yourself to us by filling in a Guest Card, which you should find in the pews in front of you. These cards simply help us to know who you are, and how we can best serve you.
