Course Description:

Participants in this course will learn about the various types of imaging modalities available including: Radiography, Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Diagnostic Ultrasound, Scintigraphy, and more. As well, there will be discussion about clinical practice guidelines for imaging and prediction rules for acquiring imaging such as the Ottawa ankle rules, Canadian C-spine rules, and Pittsburgh knee rules. Participants will learn how to interpret musculoskeletal imaging comprising of articular disorders, bone neoplasms, musculoskeletal infection, vascular disorders, and congenital disorders. In addition, participants will review MRI’s of the spine (disc disorders, spondylolisthesis/spondylolysis, and scoliosis), knee, and shoulder. Lastly, one will learn the basic principles of musculoskeletal injury and the most common fractures, dislocations, and sprains observed.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the importance of diagnostic imaging in screening for systemic disease in Physical Therapy practice.
  2. Determine the clinical relevance of diagnostic imaging tools.
  3. Identify the indications for selected diagnostic imaging tests based on history and examination findings.
  4. Interpret basic written diagnostic imaging reports to formulate a differential diagnosis.
  5. Interpret selected diagnostic images such as X-ray, MRI, CT scans, and bone scans in order to identify structural abnormalities of the spine and extremities.

About the Speaker:

John A. Taylor graduated as a chiropractor in 1979 from CMCC in Toronto. He practiced in Vancouver, B.C., earned his diplomate in radiology from LACC, and completed a research fellowship in osteoradiology at the University of California, San Diego. He co-authored a textbook entitled Skeletal Imaging: Atlas of the Spine and Extremities. The second edition was published by Elsevier in January, 2010. He is the author of over 50 peer-reviewed articles in the chiropractic and biomedical literature and has lectured worldwide on the topic of diagnostic imaging in chiropractic practice. He is currently coordinator of diagnostic imaging and professor of radiology in the chiropractic program at D’Youville College, Buffalo, NY. He is a diplomate of the American Chiropractic Board of Radiology and a consulting radiologist at Western New York Imaging Group in Buffalo, NY.
