Course Description: This course introduces the student to the knowledge base and technical skills for all courses in Welding Technology. Areas of study include career opportunities in welding, welding terms and processes, oxyfuel cutting, lab, and equipment safety. Safety instruction is integrated into all activities. Students will utilize problem-solving techniques and participate in laboratory activities to develop an understanding of course concepts. Teachers should provide each student with real world learning opportunities and instruction related to welding occupations. Students are encouraged to become active members of Skills USA for additional co-curricular opportunities that enhance student achievement, develop student leadership, and support experiential learning. Course components also address the 21st Century Learning Skills and Technology Tools. All West Virginia teachers are responsible for classroom instruction that integrates learning skills, technology tools, and content standards and objectives.

Standard 4: Oxyfuel Welding and Cutting Equipment
Objectives / The student will
ET.O.FWT.4.1 / transport oxyfuel cylinders, secure to work station, assemble and set up oxy fuel welding and
cutting equipment and set correct line pressures.
ET.O.FWT.4.2 / perform soap and water leak test.
ET.O.FWT.4.3 / lay-out patterns on metal using steel rule, square and soapstone.
ET.O.FWT.4.4 / perform 90 degree straight cuts, bevel cuts and hole cuts.
ET.O.FWT.4.5 / discuss reasons for poor cuts and four causes for back fire.
ET.O.FWT.4.6 / clean and maintain cutting equipment and demonstrate proper shut down and storage of the equipment.
ET.O.FWT.4.7 / choose the proper tip size for braze and oxyacetylene welding, light and adjust flame for welding of mild steel.
