Course Description:

In Module 7: Dental Caries Management: Age 6 through Adult, you'll learn about dental caries risk assessment and disease management for patients age 6 through adult.

In Module 8: Interim Therapeutic Restoration (ITR), you’ll learn about this procedure and the considerations for when and how to perform it.

Educational Objectives:

Module 7: By the end of this module, you will be able to:

·  Better understand how to apply the prevention-focused model of care to individuals age 6 through adult

·  Better understand the dental caries risk assessment protocols for patients in this age group

·  Identify the major steps in determining dental caries risk status for this age group

·  Better understand the dental caries management protocols for this age group

Module 8: By the end of this module, you will be able to:

·  Differentiate between Interim Therapeutic Restoration and Atraumatic Restorative Technique

·  Identify the benefits of ITR

·  Understand when and why you might choose to provide ITR instead of traditional restoration

·  Define the stages of disease and the corresponding levels of prevention

·  Discuss the AAPD Guidelines for ITR

·  Identify the clinical techniques involved in performing ITR

Authors/Instructors:

Natalia Chalmers, DDS, PhD – As the Director of Analytics and Publication at the DentaQuest Institute, Dr. Chalmers develops policies on data usage, implements research practices and prioritizes publications on various topics. Prior to joining the DentaQuest Institute, Dr. Chalmers served as a Pediatric Dentist Clinical Research Fellow at the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), leading the latest clinical, translationaland basicresearch while providing clinical service to the unique pediatric patient population at the NIH Clinical Center. There, Dr. Chalmers was actively engaged in efforts centered on enhancing the quality of patient care. In her leadership roles, Dr. Chalmers serves as a fellow with the Pediatric Oral Health Research and Policy Center, expert consultant for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Council on Scientific Affairs, Dean’s Faculty at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, and officer for the International Association for Dental Research Women in Science Network.

Rob Compton, DDS - Dr. Robert Compton leads the DentaQuest Institute in its work with oral health professionals across the United States on quality, prevention and disease management in dental care delivery. Dr. Compton is a nationally recognized leader on issues of dental quality, dental reimbursement, dental analytics and oral health. Most recently, Dr. Compton served as vice president of business intelligence for DentaQuest, one of the nation's leading oral health companies. Dr. Compton also serves as President of the DentaQuest Oral Health Center, a model dental office committed to prevention-focused care, which is co-located with the DentaQuest Institute in Westborough, Massachusetts. Fifteen years ago, Dr. Compton established the DentaQuest Oral Health Center to be a model for prevention-focused dental care and minimally-invasive treatment. The Oral Health Center has been recognized by the American Dental Association as an Adult Preventive Care Practice of the Year.

Mark Doherty, DMD - Dr. Doherty joined the DentaQuest Institute in 2005 as Director of the Institute’s Safety Net Solutions (SNS) program. For nearly 30 years, Dr. Doherty served as the Director of Oral Health Services at Dorchester House Multi-Service Center in Boston, MA, where he built a safety net dental program that included three separate treatment sites, 18 dental providers, several specialty services, and a staff of more than 40. He currently serves as the Chief Dental Officer for the Taunton Oral Health Center and for Commonwealth Mobile Oral Health Services, which provides portable oral health care at sites throughout Massachusetts.

Marty Lieberman, DDS - Martin Lieberman has worked with Neighborcare Health in Seattle, Washington as the Dental Director since 2002. Prior to his community health center work, h e worked in private practice in Chicago for 18 yers. Dr. Lieberman earned his DDS at the University of Minnesota, School of Dentistry. Dr. Lieberman has led a culture change in the way Neighborcare Health's dental program loos at process improvement and quality. He served as a faculty member for the HRSA Oral Health Pilot Collaborative, and has also been a faculty member for IHI, HRSA, and NNOHA.

Mary Foley, RDH - Mary serves as the Executive Director of the Medicaid-CHIP State Dental Association. Ms. Foley is the former state dental director in Massachusetts, and served in this position for approximately five years. She is a graduate of the Quinsigamond Community College dental hygiene program. She earned her bachelor of science degree, magna cum laude, from Worcester State College, and her master’s degree in public health from the University of Massachusetts School of Public Health and Health Policy, in epidemiology and biostatistics.

Mike Monopoli, DMD - Dr. Michael Monopoli is a 1981 graduate of the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He received Master of Public Health and Master of Science degrees from the Harvard University School of Public Health in 1988. Dr. Monopoli also completed a fellowship in Geriatric Dentistry at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and the Veterans Administration in 1990. Dr. Monopoli served as the dental director of the Office of Oral Health for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health from 1995-2001. Dr. Monopoli is presently the Director of Policy and Programs at the DentaQuest Foundation in Boston, MA. At the Foundation, Dr. Monopoli leads grant making activities, coordinates best evidence, community input, and various data sources on improving health outcomes, to design and manage strategies for the prevention of oral disease, health systems impact, and community-based solutions to oral health problems.

Susan Presnol - Susan is the Manager of Training and Technical Assistance for DentaQuest Institute. In her position, Susan is responsible to lead the development and implementation of all clinical training and technical assistance programs for the DentaQuest Institute. This role includes the translation of internally, and externally, developed clinical innovations into web-based, on-site and group training products and services that will support dental care providers in integrating prevention and disease management protocols into routine practice.
