LADY OF AGRICULTURE SELECTION PROCESS

2018

1.Application forms are distributed to interested students at Preston High School during the months of January through May.

2.Applications are due to the Extension Office by May 5, 2018.

3.Applications are screened, and enrollment in 4-H/FFA and GPA is verified.

4.Qualified applicants aresent a letter with the home visit schedule and expectations of the committee’s visit.

5.Home visitshave been tentatively scheduled, you will be notified when dates are confirmed. The visitation committee will be representatives chosen by the Preston FFA Alumni Association Scholarship Committee, and either an Extension/4-H Agent or FFA Advisor or both.

6.Each committee member who makes a home visit will complete “Home Visit Score Sheet”. Results of the score sheets are averaged, and the average scores are provided to each of the judges that will conduct the interview.

7.The actual interview and selection is conducted at the Preston County Extension Office. The judges are invited from outside the county, and they will have an agricultural background. The interview date has been tentatively scheduled, you will be notified when dates are confirmed

8.All Lady of Agriculture candidates are interviewed on the same day. If the number of candidates requires that Lady of Agriculture candidates be interviewed on different days, a different set of judges may be provided.

9.After all candidates for each position are interviewed; the judges rank the candidates, and place each name, into an envelope labeled Lady of Agriculture, First Runner-Up, Second Runner-Up, etc. The results are then sealed.

10. Each Lady of Agriculture candidate must attach with their application, two letters

of reference. One letter should be from someone in your community and the other from someone within the school system.

11. Lady of Agriculture will have no visible tattoos and piercings (with exception of ear piercing).

12. Lady of Agriculture candidates may not be pregnant, nor have ever been pregnant.

13.Lady of Agriculture candidates may not have a disciplinary record on file with Preston County Schools.

14.Lady of Agriculture and the runners up, must act in a respectful, ladylike manner at all times.

Violation of items #11 through #14 may result in forfeiture of title and scholarship funds.

SCHOLARSHIP GUIDELINES FOR LADY OF AGRICULTURE

1.She must be a junior at Preston High School, have attended Preston High for at least 1 full year, and be an active participant in Preston County FFA or 4-H one year prior to completing this application.

2.Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 for 9th, 10th & 11th grades.

3.Plans to enroll in a post secondary course of study that will result in a technical certificate or associate/bachelor’s degree.

4.To be considered an active participate, the candidate must:

a.Display knowledge in the vocational aspects of agriculture.

b.Be knowledgeable in the technical aspects of agricultural production which includes, but not limited to – livestock horticulture, field crops, forestry, aquaculture, etc.

c.Complete a series of FFA chapter or 4-H club projects.

d.Participate in community activities.

e.Has held an office or committee in school or community organization.

5.Lady of Agriculture will be awarded a scholarship to be used for post-secondary education.

Lady of Agriculture $1000.00

1st and 2nd runners up $ 200.00 each

This scholarship is not affiliated with the Kingwood Volunteer Fire Department or the Preston County BuckwheatFestival.

6.The applicants for Lady of Agriculture will have demonstrated her agricultural knowledge and expertise through actual agricultural experience in either on-farm and/or off-farm agricultural business. It is preferred that the applicant will have an agriculture experience project(s) and/or enterprise (s) as a part of their club work.
