Course Description:

Educational Technology In General And Special Education-This course focuses on the design and use of computers and other technological devices that facilitate communication, learning and related functions in educational contexts for children in general and special education; use of technology to foster access to curriculum for all students; technology for use in fostering literacy and remediating reading disabilities; special applications with computers in the classroom; information literacy; use of technology for children with autism; and recent developments in the field of assistive technology for students with disabilities.

  1. Course Objectives:

Teachers will:

  1. Search the internet for discipline specific websites and evaluate them.
  2. Evaluate assistive technology software and devices to be used in General and Special Education .
  3. Create an educational presentation for their class.

a) The PowerPoint will teach discipline specific ideas from an interdisciplinary and multicultural approach. It will incorporate teacher generated multimedia and will serve as motivation within the teacher’s overall lesson plan. It should be noted that the presentation is not a lesson plan but only a component of it.

4. Participate in group research projects involving special needs.

5. View videos on various disabilities.

6. Communicate and share knowledge with other teachers as to daily challenges in the classroom.

7. Read and write about informative journal articles related to general and special education.

8. Develop a humanistic, compassionate, and practical approach to educational problems.

There is no one text book that will cover the scope of this course. Use of the varied software programs will be explained through teacher demonstration, hand-outs, assistive online resources, book use,videos, disks, and the class website(

  • Multicultural and Interdisciplinary Lesson Plan

A curriculum based PowerPoint presentation will be created to augment the lesson plan. The PowerPoint presentation is only a component of the lesson plan and is not the lesson plan itself. It will be created in accordance with the needs of the specific teacher's class. The PowerPoint will be the creation of the teacher in order to motivate students on a specific topic within the lesson plan. It will include the audio, video, animation, and important components of PowerPoint.

*all assignments should be (spelled-check) in Microsoft Word. Spelling, grammar, and organizationimpacts the grade.

8. / Organized Flash Drive: subdirectories and assignments labeled & numbered correctly. The professor will copy each teacher's class folder as a backup during the 12th session. The teacher is required to keep his/her flash drive as a backup.
Hint: place a copy of your updated flash drive on your home computer desktop throughout the course, in case it is lost. / 10%
*Homework Assignments will be taken down one grade after the due date.
*Email the professor if you know you are going to be late or absent for class ().At an appropriate time, speak to the professor about your tardiness / absence.
You must be present for every session, especially the last 2 sessions.
