Course Syllabus Mr. Trumbull

AP CalculusBC

Course Questions:

Why Calculus?

What is the relationship between a function, its derivative, and it’s integral?

How does all your previous mathematics tie into calculus?

Course Understandings:

At the end of this course, students will understand:

- Calculus is a necessary tool implemented in many fields.

- Calculus utilizes much of the mathematics learned in previous mathematics courses.

- The implementation and application of a derivative and an integral.

Content: This course will cover a variety of topics including prerequisites, limits, continuity, derivatives, application, definite integrals, differential equations, area, volume, improper integrals, series, convergence, parametric representations, polar functions, and vectors.

Expectations: It is expected that all students will follow all classroom and school rule. Students should come prepared to class with a pencil, notebook, and Calc. book each class. Students will be required to intently read each chapter covered in the book. Students will take notes on what they have read as well as what is presented in class lecture. Development of problem solving skills is essential.

Grading: Homework will be assigned almost every night. Timely completion is integral to your success. Each chapter there will be at least 2 quizzes (appox. 50 pts.) and one chapter test (appox. 100 pts.) A 50 pt. Problem set will also be assigned every chapter. A problem set consists of 4-10 problems. These problems tend to be longer, harder, and more thought provoking then the average homework or test problems. You will have at least a week to complete a problem test. All students will be required to take the class final.

College Credit: Students may take the AP Calculus Test at the end of the course and may obtain college credit depending on their score. You may be eligible for college credit offered through the University of Pittsburgh College in High School program. This credit may be transferable to other schools. Deadline for CHS is September 15.
