Course Syllabus: Independent Study Spanish 1

¡Bienvenidos a la clase de Español 1! I am excited to welcome all of you to a new school year! In this class, we will work to build proficiency in the Spanish language by covering topics such as grammar, vocabulary, and culture. The class textbook is Realidades 1.

Our class will be meeting Thursdays, 12:30pm - 1:30pm.

Communication

Since we only meet once a week, communication is crucial! Please e-mail me at , or come see me in person if you have any questions or concerns regarding the class. I will also be sending out text message reminders. If you wish to receive these text reminders please text:

@is-span1” to the number “81010.”

Materials

Please come to class prepared with the following materials every day: class textbook, class workbook, and writing tools (black/blue pen, pencil).

Behavior and Expectations

My number one rule is RESPECT! Respect for yourself. Respect for others. Respect for the environment. Remember the Golden Rule!

How respect looks in the class: •Arrive to class on time. •Listen when others are speaking. •Do your work. •Support others instead of bringing them down. •Refrain from eating or chewing gum in the class. •Clean up after yourself. •Ask for Sr. Silva’s permission to leave your seat or the classroom. •Keep cellphones away during class unless Sr. Silva says they’re needed for class (unapproved cellphone use in class may result in the confiscation of the cellphone for the day if it becomes a problem.)

Consequences

Failure to show respect in my class will result in the following actions:

1) Verbal warning

2) Behavior Log entry on Q

3) Contact parents

4) Parent/teacher conference

5) Referral to administrator

*Sr. Silva has the ability to skip certain actions, depending on the situation.

Assignments

All homework and classwork will be done on separate pieces of paper and turned in as a packet on the day of class, or e-mailed to me by the beginning of class. All homework packets must include the class name, my name, the packet number, and the date. Homework and classwork will be checked for completeness, not correctness. Since we only meet once a week, doing homework and classwork is crucial to the class grade and to your understanding of Spanish.

Homework & Classwork Marks

✓+ complete (100%)
✓ incomplete (60% or more)
✓- missing (less than 60%)

Posted Assignments

Homework and classwork will be posted and updated weekly in the classroom and on Sr. Silva’s CHAMPS website. Reminders will also be sent via text messages.

Late Work

All homework is due at the beginning of class. If you e-mail me homework, it must be e-mailed to me by the beginning of class. Late work will receive full credit if you have an excused absence and submit the work to me at the beginning of class when you return. All other late work will receive 10% off for each school day it is late. Work that is over 5 days late will automatically be marked 50% off.

Grading

The class grading categories are as follows:
Homework & Classwork = 40%

Tests & Projects = 40%

Participation = 10%

Final = 10%

Participation is an important part of learning languages! Positive participation in class includes arriving on time, attempting to answer questions, being on task, and following instructions.

Every week you will receive a 5 point grade based on your participation in class and your use of class time. You will receive 5 points for the week if you arrive on time to class, have your homework ready, participate in class, stay engaged, and stay on task. Negative behavior will result in a lower weekly grade.

I look forward to having a great year with all of you. If there are any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me!

I have read and understand the information on both pages of the class syllabus.
