Course Description: This course is designed for the student who wants an in-depth experience in the production of a yearbook. Yearbook is a challenging course in which students plan, develop, market, publish, and distribute the school annual. Staffers will be responsible for every aspect of production including selling advertising, planning themes, designing covers and end sheets, planning the ladder, designing dividers, interviewing, researching, writing articles, editing writing for style and mechanics, writing headlines and captions, taking pictures, and designing pages. Therefore a higher level of responsibility and work ethic is required. Finally, students will work individually, in pairs, and in groups to learn new skills and publish a quality product.

Materials Needed: Pen/Pencil, folder, Digital camera (optional), notebook/paper, computer access

Course Requirements: In order to be successful in this course, yearbook staffers must meet the following expectations:

  1. Staffers will meet all deadlines (small or large) correctly and completely.
  2. Staffers will demonstrate positive and cooperative attitudes toward each other and others in the school and the community.
  3. Staffers will safely and correctly handle all equipment and materials associated with the publication (cameras, pictures, computers, ads, etc.)
  4. Staffers will complete their ad sales on time and meet their quotas.
  5. Staffers will do whatever it takes to get their jobs done correctly, completely, and on time. They must often work before or after school to cover events and make deadlines.
  6. Staffers are expected to be responsible, accurate, and fair in everything that they produce for yearbook.

Tardies and Leaving/Returning to School: Students are expected to be in the room and in their seats ready to work every day. On days students must leave to sell ads, cover stories, sell yearbooks, or take care of other yearbook business, they must sign out and back in to school in the office. Students must return to school each day by 2:45.

Grading:

1st Nine Weeks:

Ad Sales – 50%

Assignments – 25%

Daily Participation – 25%

2nd, 3rd, and 4th Nine Weeks: You will be given the grading criteria for these at a later date.

Attendance: If you have an unexcused absence, you will receive a zero for daily participation points. If your absence is excused, you will not receive points for that day. This will in no way negatively affect your grade.
