Course Overview

This course draws upon students’ everyday experiences and uses a variety of frameworks, including the ecozones framework, to help students learn about the geography of Canada and the country's place in the global community. Students will investigate the interconnections among the country's landforms, climates, soils, plants, animals and human activities in order to understand Canada's character and diversity.

Course Content

  • Canada in the World - mapping in geographic skills 15 hrs
  • Physical Geography and Ecozones - landforms, climate, soils, vegetation, wildlife, human activities, and national parks 30 hrs.
  • Population and Demographics - growth in Canada, pyramid analysis and population trends 25 hrs.
  • Canadian Immigration Policy - point system, push - pull factors, types immigrants 15 hrs.
  • Urban Studies - cities, settlement factors, industrial location 15 hrs.
  • Canadian Industry - primary, secondary, tertiary, sustainability 7 hrs.
  • Ecological Footprint - environmental studies sustainability 3 hrs.

Assessment and Evaluation

Assessment and evaluation of this course will be through a variety of methods as indicated below. Students will have multiple opportunities to practice skills and demonstrate achievement. The final mark for this course will comprise of 70 percent course work, assignments and 30 percent summative evaluation towards the end of the course. The summative evaluation will include a culminating activity designed to demonstrate appropriate application of the knowledge and skills learned during the course, worth 10 percent and an exam that will be worth 20 percent of the final mark.

Classroom Routines and Procedures

Students are expected to being class punctually, regularly attend and behave in a manner consistent with the schools code of behaviour. Students are also expected to be prepared with notebook, textbooks and writing instruments as well as the geographers tool kit. The tool kit should comprise of a pencil, 10, coloured pencils, ruler, protractor, compass and calculator.

Attendance and Late Policy

Regular attendance and punctuality are absolutely vital to success in this course students who are absent should have a note when they returned to class.
