GOALS: Students will be able to use English to describe their ideas, explain a concept, and critique the reasoning of others in both oral and written language.
MAJOR TOPICS: * The topics below are not necessary listed in the order they will be taught.
Students will acquire listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English language through varieties of learning strategies such as collaboration, partner, small groups, whole groups, and independent work. Content concentrations include:
Vocabulary: Literary and academic social studies words of
the ancient worlds (Babylonia & Assyria, Mesopotamia, Mediterranean, Egypt, Greece, Rome, India, and China)
the United States, its land and people
Reading Strategies: preview; predict, visualize, draw conclusions, identify problems and solutions, make inferences, distinguish facts from opinions; recognize cause and effect, ask questions, summarize, understand and use maps/tables, locate and organize information
Writing:description, narration, persuasion, exposition, and research report

HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS:
Homework is generally assigned every school day. Assignments are expected to be passed in on time and finished completely. Homework is evaluated based on completion and effort, not onaccuracy. Incomplete or missedhomework assignments must be made up and passed in on the next day in order to receive partial-credit.
4 points – complete homework
3 points – ¾ complete
2 points – ½ complete
1 point – ¼ complete
0 point – incomplete
GRADING POLICY:
5% Attendance/Participation/Organizing Notebook
10% Preparation (homework and bringing materials needed for class)
15% Quizzes
25% Projects
25% Tests/Exams
20% Exemplars/Open Response Questions
MAKE-UP PROCEDURE:
If a student is absent from school, it is his/her responsibility to see Ms. Nguyen upon return to school to find out about any missed class notes and/or homework assignments. Arrangements will be made on an individual basis to take any missed tests. Make-up work is to be done in a reasonable amount of time based on length of absences.

A tool bag that contains the following items:pens, pencils, erasers, highlighters, a pencil sharpener, dry-erase markers, a glue stick, scissors, and a ruler.
*Adjustments may be made to this syllabus to meet students’ needs. If adjustments are made to this syllabus during the school year, parents/guardians will be notified and a revised syllabus will be issued.
