Course Description:

This course content will be based upon the Alabama Course of Study: Family and Consumer Sciences. This course provides opportunities for exploring benefits of studying children, stages of development, child development theories, child health and safety, behavior management, child abuse, needs of exceptional children, childcare services, community resources, technology, and career opportunities related to working with children. This course is taught for an eighteen-week period to ninth through twelfth grade students.

Course Goals:

The goal of this class is to help students develop skills related to the physical, social, intellectual, and emotional development of children.

Essential Questions:

What factors should individuals consider when deciding to become a parent?

What does a woman need to do throughout her pregnancy to optimize health for herself and her baby?

How can parents aid in the development of their infants?

What are appropriate development stages of infants?

In what ways can parents help their toddler develop?

In what ways do parents help their preschoolers develop physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectually?

What parenting skills are needed to parent a school-age child?

In what ways can parents help adolescents cope with the changes they are experiencing?

Why is good hygiene important at their stage of development?

In what ways do parents show care and guidance for their child/children?

What is the difference between guidance and discipline?

How does technology impact the lives of children?

How do you prepare for careers related to working with children?

Grading/Assessment:

Points will be earned by daily work, laboratory grades, test, and projects/activities. Grades will be determined by diving points earned by total points possible.
