County Nutrition Action Plan Committee Meeting

Minutes

March 15, 2012

I. Present:

Linda McClure – WIC

Dayna Ravalin – SNAP ED

Joyce Fields – DSS

Wendy Lewis – Food Bank

Lisa Paniagua – Cooperative Extension

Kimberlee Hampton – Cooperative Extension

Kathleen Karle – SNAP ED

Joyce asked to make one correction to the minutes from December 8. Under the outline of the DSS objectives, remove the last sentence of #6 (The first pilot target will be Subway in Morro Bay.) That sentence is not related to the restaurant guide they are preparing.

II. Updates:

A. Public Health:

·  Hired new staff person – Magi Mejorado started the first part of January. She is bilingual and has hit the ground running. We are lucky to have found her.

·  Started offering classes – Magi started offering HOTM classes at WIC in February. They are going extremely well. She also worked with Joyce and sent out a flyer advertising a 5 series class at DSS. 2,000 letters were sent out – only 20 people responded. But when class started only 6 people showed up. Getting people to attend classes on a regular basis will be tough. Magi is also working with Wendy and her staff to find sites at the Food Bank distributions that will make good classes. We also are working with the Housing Authority. Kimberlee and Lisa mentioned that they go to some Food Bank distributions. Kimberlee said she would send us a list of all the sites they plan to be at this year.

·  CX3 – Magi, Taylor and Kathleen have attended several trainings and webinars. The 3 neighborhoods they will work in are Oceano, Paso Robles and San Miguel. More to come.

B. DSS:

·  In the process of getting a new machine that will address letters to CalFresh participants. They will be sending out HOTM materials to all recipients every 3 weeks, in order to meet grant requirements. They are moving to postcards vs. letters to avoid stuffing envelopes.

·  They are still developing a restaurant guide, but the focus will be more on healthy eating, and they will highlight a 10-12 local fast food restaurants to give people an idea of what to choose if they eat there (McDonalds, Subway, Denny’s, El Pollo Loco etc)

·  They have ordered 8,000 coloring books – which are currently at the printer. There will be crayons to go with the coloring books. They can share these with WIC and Cooperative Extension when complete. They also ordered posters to put up in offices.

·  Still working on EBT machines for restaurants and Farmer’s Markets.

C. Cooperative Extension – Moving ahead as to their plan – Kimberlee will send us a copy of their current targets for 2011-12. They also got a new staff member who is working on nutrition education but not through their grant.

D. WIC – Great responses to the HOTM classes Magi has offered. This nicely supplements the nutrition education WIC already does. WIC has 4,975 participants per month.

E. Food Bank – Does not have any capacity to do nutrition education, so working with them really helps them complete their mission. Wendy asked about CalFresh – not being able to buy a cooked chicken in a market, but people can purchase soda. Joyce explained that there are two types of aid – Cal Works recipients get cash aid which is more flexible. Cal Fresh also gets aid but it is more restrictive.

III. CNAP Plan

The group came up with the following objectives for the CNAP plan. Kathleen will send them out for review, once typed up.

Overall Goal – To increase fruit and vegetable consumption in SLO County residents.

·  Objective 1 – DSS will send out 10 HOTM mailings to all Cal Fresh participants, and will place posters on the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables in all DSS and WIC offices. DSS surveyed CalFresh participants on their fruit and vegetable consumption at the beginning of the grant, and will resurvey at the end of the grant period to see if consumption has increased.

·  Objective 2 – Cooperative Extension will educate ____ K-6 students at ____ elementary schools on the importance of eating fruits and vegetables. Classes will include tastings and food demonstrations.

·  Objective 3 – Cooperative Extension will educate _____ parents of students on the importance of eating fruits and vegetables. Classes will include tastings and food demonstrations.

·  Objective 4 – The Food Bank will offer the Back Pack Snack Program to students at 12 after school program sites, with the goal of increasing the number of children who participate by 25% next year. Each snack includes a fruit, protein, and milk or 100% fruit juice.

·  Objective 5 – WIC will offer the Framer’s Market Nutrition Program to 350 families this summer, which will enable families to purchase $20 of fresh produce in certified farmer’s markets.

·  Objective 6 – SNAP ED will offer HOTM classes to 600 county residents, and will offer a 5 series nutrition class to 350 residents to increase fruit and vegetable consumption.

·  Objective 7 – Public Health will offer Go, Slow Whoa, a healthy snacking curriculum, to at least 6 different sites and will reach at least 150 children who participate in the Back Pack Snack Program by September 2012.

·  Objective 8 – Public Health will work with local policy makers and will get at least 3 new policies passed, highlighting the importance of purchasing local produce for a healthy diet.
